It's not even just facts. There are sort of two halves to what the news media conveys: What is true, and what is important. The second half in the RWM is about as bad since it's become a barrage of cherry-picked stories and endless fuel for whataboutism and deflection bullshit, but it's also becoming weaponized to the point that it's the entire story and it only needs to be recognized at the buzzword level since the REAL story is how nobody else is paying attention to the chaff being thrown in the air.

"Something something Antifa riots, something something Uranium One, sounds very scandalous, I can't believe it's not being taken more seriously."

Now it's being deployed again for this latest scandal. "Something something Biden Ukraine, someone should really look into that!"

I want new terms to correspond to "factoid," like "happenoid" (for bullshit isolated incidents inflated into national news stories) and "scandaloid" (for bullshit controversies over things that are completely routine).

In fact, the first two decades of the 20th century saw an ongoing campaign for earlier Christmas shopping. American professor Paul Collins has shown how socialist activists – including Florence Kelley, co-founder of the NAACP – fought to free overworked and often under-aged shop workers from the terror of the Christmas rush, which they portrayed as a humanitarian disaster. “Thousands of workers in every city have been taught by bitter experience to look forward to Christmas with dread,” said the Consumer League of New York. “A very little unselfishness on your part will greatly lighten [their] burden.” Sensing opportunity, savvy merchants climbed on board, and by 1918 the movement had been co-opted to such an extent that Santa Claus was telling the public to shop early for the sake of the war effort.
