Random Stranger posted:This has been true since last year. It really is the fact that Trump is going after the presumed candidate that has made her move. No I think what made her move is the Dems in swing districts coming out for impeachment. Pelosi is ONLY worried about holding the House and from Day 1 of this new congress she has been scared shitless that if they impeached, there would be backlash in swing districts and Dems would lose all of the gains they made in 2018. It's a spineless stance from a politician that is way too integrated into the Washington machine to see the forest for the trees. But hey, these Reps whose re-elections will actually be on the line if this goes the way Pelosi thinks it might are the ones who grew a spine before she did. So props to them I guess (but really gently caress them too). e: tax:

To be fair I don't expect anything until Friday, because it's after the DNI's deadline is past. Also now Donny is going to be spit spraying angry, and probably won't be able to help the acting DNI lie about poo poo before he briefs Congress.

I decided to start looking up stuff on Bill CLinton's Impeachment and found this gem on wikipediaquote:In November 1998, the Democrats picked up five seats in the House although the Republicans still maintained majority control.[13] The results were a particular embarrassment for House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who, before the election, had been reassured by private polling that Clinton's scandal would result in Republican gains of up to thirty House seats.[13] Shortly after the elections, Gingrich, who had been one of the leading advocates for impeachment,[14] announced he would resign from Congress as soon as he was able to find somebody to fill his vacant seat;[13] Gingrich fulfilled this pledge, and officially resigned from Congress on January 3, 1999.[15]

Run out the clock for what? To what end? Representatives are avalanching toward supporting an inquiry because their offices are getting flooded with democratic voters demanding they move toward impeachment. The voters want this. Representatives no longer gain anything from waiting.

it's my understanding that a committee on impeachment is how you get the legal status of a real deal big boy formal impeachment inquiry, unless you want to devote a very major part of the full House's business to it, which... I guess you could do but I'm not seeing the problem (assuming it is put together in a timely fashion) I assume you could instead delegate the duty to House Judiciary but impeachment investigations aren't the only thing THEY do, so similar efficiency questions to spending House time on it

Also the funny thing here is that for loving years now the line has been that Nancy Pelosi must be the top Dem in the House because she's some kind of iron disciplinarian who always gets the caucus to vote as she likes, until it turned out that this was a massive lie and now we're supposed to accept that she's just this hapless little old lady who obviously has to slavishly follow the whims of her caucus.
