Please stop having a ghoulish and thinly-veiled desire for a war with Iran. Both things are pretty unlikely and close to zero, it's only this thread and John Bolton that salivate over the idea of a major new war.

I mean I don't think the Trump administration is really interested in a war, but there are a lot more hawks than just Bolton. Senator Graham is one obvious example who has called for retaliatory strikes. There's basically no chance of a ground war but we could still kill a lot of people even without one.

The person I was responding to said "Foreign policy of all states is the same: maximize national interest" and I thought that was a common enough sentiment - and embodies a very widely taught and invoked theory of international relations - that it was a worthwhile exercise to actually discuss what those words mean and how that seemingly simple statement is premised on a lot of background assumptions. The textbook poo poo we internalize in school does end up influencing how we view the world and its worthwhile to occasionally stop and deconstruct the language we're using to discuss and understand the world.

Hmm the dominant perspective that led us to the new gilded age may not, in fact, benefit all segments of society? But it's been the prevailing mode of thought for such a long period of decline????

A lot of people ideologically stagnate at some elementary school level poo poo, but for people who do grow ideologically over time, that just worldy rational actors stuff is like puberty. It's why you get newly minted leftists and weird detached from reality alt-righters/fascist supporters kramering into discussions with white hot 'my side good other side all bad' takes that miss every nuance of a situation.

imo it's naive to spend time worrying about them because they will always exist and no one who just read marx or just got redpilled or whatever is impacting jack poo poo in the world.

Oh absolutely.
There's a strong sense of empathy, all countries mentioned being similarly domineered by a single head of state and their party for multiple decades. They see other peoples wanting to throw off the yoke and become inspired.

Now the sentiment was always there it just needed a little trigger.

The US claimed forces did another chlorine attack in May 2019, but it was against Jihadis with hardly any casualties, so the international community really doesn't give a poo poo. Tobias Schneider did a good thread on it, here's some key parts

Ultimately this demonstrates that the Syrian government can do as many chemical attacks as it likes, just as long as they keep them small scale enough to keep them off Fox News, hence why chlorine as been such an effective chemical weapon for them.

They're still using chemical weapons. Glossing over it when it's done on people you don't like rather than civilians contributes to normalizing this kind of poo poo and making it more acceptable. That said I won't presume to say that this hasn't happened already, what with the numerous attacks over the years and people in West either impotently complaining or going all Jihadi false flag/Assad the Lion.

Indeed, it does show that among the international community the supposedly firm position against chemical weapon use is rather flexible, which isn't great for the prevention of chemical weapon use in future conflicts. There's already reports of sulphur mustard use in Sudan back in 2016, so it's definitely an issue that goes beyond Syria.

Also remember Syria is part of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which they signed up to after the August 21st 2013 Sarin attacks, so they're blatantly in violation in that.
