I don't have Stronger Monsters, I just dodge all monsters I see unless I'm really hankering for a fight/I've got a quest involving them.

I did manage to defeat a Metal Slime by accident before the Slayer, so that was rad.

It really doesn't look like the S enhancements are going to end up as DLC for the other versions. Nintendo considers it as a full on remake rather than a port/re-release. Also I heard that Yuji Hori said that a Switch version of DQXI was a dying wish from Satoru Iwata.

In other DQ news, I downloaded the DQIII port on Switch. I've only played on my Switch Lite, but I think it actually looks very pretty. The screenshots online do it a disservice. These ports are absolutely not a Final Fantasy V and VI remake situation.

I am the morning sun, come to vanquish this horrible night!
Picked up 11S, already played through all of the PS4 version, but hell, let’s do it again! It’s a great game and I’m gonna do 2D mode with stronger monsters.

Eventually I’ll grab 1-3, it’s been a couple years since I’ve played any of them.

2D and Stronger Monsters might be rough, it's back to random battles and from what I heard the encounter rate is high

Amppelix
Aug 6, 2010

The encounter rate is really, really high

Like, take three steps between battles high

You can experience it for yourself even when playing normal mode in the past dragon quest segments, those are only in 2D.

Stronger monsters is in the general vicinity of NES-era difficulty for bosses and encounters, I would say, but with all of the extra quality of life improvements, it’s a bit easier overall.

Yeah imo Stronger Monsters is the way the game is meant to be played, you actually have to use appropriate skills during each fight. Would recommend especially I you've already played any other game in the series.

Also did they remove the No Fleeing setting for this one? I didn't see it when starting up a new file.

LET ME EXPLAIN

Is Hero going Sword and Shield a good idea on Stronger Monsters? I just went ham with a Greatsword when I played on normal difficulty but I’m wondering if the defensive boost will make a difference.

I would recommend it until you get Veronica and Serena at least. Blocking is pretty rare that early on but the defense difference is pretty noticeable.
Also I haven't it far enough but from what a buddy told me, if you wanna do post game with Strong Monsters then Sword and Shield is almost mandatory for Hero.

I tried to fight most of the monsters that got in my way in the original version and I think as a result the 2D mode encounter rate has me fighting slightly fewer encounters on average per area.

I also don't think the PS4 version will get patched, but the context for that Iwata bit was that Iwata came to Square Enix first asking for DQ11 to return to Nintendo and they agreed with DQ11 being one of the first announced Switch games, so it's sweet to see it finally come home.

also i told yall the nes games on switch look fine!!! it's good!!!

Really wish there was a tactic I could set that would tell Erik to spam Half-Inch

As it is, when I'm fighting trash I just set everyone else a tactic and manually command him to do his thing. Very mildly inconvenient. It means i have to actually keep my hands on the controller instead of doing something productive like posting this whingepost on the something awful forums

Pretty sure you don't lost half your gold on game over in DQXI until Act 3. You'll know when a little star is added to your save file.

Yes, and it would be awful if you couldn't.

While I'm complaining: It seems like the SP requirements grow exponentially higher up the tree, but your SP gains are quite stagnant. Which essentially means it takes longer and longer in between getting cool new toys. That's a disappointing design decision if it is so.

I used greatswords right from the start on stronger monsters and never had any problems with him dying. The hero is still one of your 2 most durable characters even with the greatsword, while the extra damage it can do is fantastic.

Yeah, you'll eventually be getting a lot more than 2 SP per level. Did you ever play DQ9? It works kind of like that, although iirc there's less of a bell curve.

Ok, I retract my bullying accusation, DQXI. You were nicer than I thought.

Still, it never fails: if a game provides something which provides cosmetic differences (or good looks, in the case that everything is already cosmetic), I will drop literally everything to get it. I remember at least a few games where I'm perpetually short on cash because I spend all of it on things like decorations and outfits.

Why wouldn't they port the competent 3DS remakes? I guess that will eventually come. Although to be honest the remakes were underwhelming and I have a lot of love for the original's charm.

i'm a weirdo who prefers the gbc ones, so i'm more excited about this than porting the remakes

Spear for Serena is fine early game if you take the detour and spend some time in the first casino to get a jackpot.

If you're in Harder Monsters mode, yup. That's honestly probably one of the more difficult required bosses just because it comes up so early and you don't have as many tools to deal with it yet.
