ATB is fine but Gust has been using a strictly better combat system since at least Iris 1 so I dunno why they'd revert to an inferior form

(The cool thing about ATB is that different characters and different moves can have different speeds, which you can also do without it being realtime)

It's fine, Ryza's ultimate attacks just involve crushing all the enemies' heads between her thighs, nothing out of the ordinary.

Don't know about that, they sell a great deal on the mobile side of things.

My theory is that much of it is more specifically the power of fan art (and fanmade content in general). Thanks to social media and ease of drawing and uploading digital art, if a character that people like to draw catches on it'll spread like wildfire and carry awareness across the internet better than any marketing campaign. People draw absurd amounts of fan art of the characters in the aforementioned mobile games too, and more suggestive character designs tend to get a large slice of that attention. Not all of it by any means but it certainly tends to help, especially if there's an actual personality attached too.

Hell, remember how Bowsette briefly blew up the internet not too long ago? That entire phenomenon was drat near entirely driven by the power of fan art, the amount of fan-created drawings and comics and so forth depicting sexy lady Bowser in a pretty short time span was completely off the charts.

Companies that try to shut down fan created work are being dumb for this reason, because it's great advertisement for minimal investment. It played a big role in Overwatch getting as big as it did, for example. You just have to actually make characters people would care about, and not be Randy Pitchford trying to solicit Battleborn porn.

Does any company actually seriously attempt to stifle fan art and such? Because completely aside from being free advertising, it also seems like it would be very much an uphill battle, assuming your work is popular enough to produce such fans.

If you're talking about romhacks or fan mods, though, that's a bit of a different story.

Also yes plenty of companies try to stifle fanart lol. They just can't chase down every single internet artist in the world. Try selling art or whatever of some popular series at cons and watch those C&D letters roll in.

Typically, in my experience, the reasons companies try to stifle fan community creations is that there's a belief that letting people use elements of your game freely makes it a lot harder to legally defend the copyright if people, say, move from doing what could be considered fan work into what could be considered straight-up merchandising. I can't say that I agree with that line of reasoning, but it's the one I've encountered on games I've worked on. I think in the age of social media most companies are better served by fostering a fan community than trying to control the community's output (or arguably even worse, muscle fan creations into existence where there isn't interest).

One game I worked on they tried (and failed, incidentally) to run a C&D campaign on fan art, that was a terrible idea. Another one tried to stop people from selling fan content because they were worried about the above, only to discover that, surprise surprise, nobody was buying fan art for their game nobody had really heard of.

tl;dr it happens but it's almost exclusively a stupid idea

chumbler

They may also try to monetize it in an exploitative way, which can be similarly stifling.

I'm still a little worried that the message Gust's upper management will take from Ryza selling well is "horny sells" and that that will be the theme of the other two entries in the trilogy, but Ryza itself looks like it's just a solid game with a cute protag and I can't wait for November

again my main worry wouldnt be for the next two games (the ryza artist clearly has a level he's into and it will probably maintain that level) but them getting a similar artist for the trilogy after this. one trilogy being moderately fanservicey is fine because it's just the artist's style, the same way kishida had his own things he was obviously into, but every trilogy having its own themes that clearly tie into the artist is cool. dusk fit hidari's art perfectly, arland fit kishida's perfectly, etc.

it always felt like they got an artist then worked around what that artist gave them, and i prefer that to them finding artists for specific things, because it feels like there's more variety from trilogy-to-trilogy.
