Best advice I was ever given?

"Ticker, you'll be a lot happier once you stop caring about the opinions of a culture that is beneath you."

I learned my worth, learned the places and people that matter.

Opened my eyes.

In terms of scale though official Touhou is not even a fraction of a percentage point. In one particular Comiket (Comiket 84 in August 2013) there were over 2500 Touhou fanworks on display. For one Comiket in one year. Comiket rep drops after this but this is because a Touhou specific doujin fair endorsed by ZUN starts to take off big time. The vast majority of Touhou work is fan content and is a big reason for its popularity, but there's also a mountain of official work in several media. It's a big franchise by any metric.

See, I was gonna mention "Lydie and Suelle was really well received and probably helped with sales being the latest entry" but then I remember Lulua was like 6 months ago, and I feel bad cause I just totally forgot about it. Even though I remember laughing my rear end off about the postgame boss and wanting to share it.
Lulua debuted at 40K from what I can see on MediaCreate/Famitsu, same as the last couple entries. So yeah, Ryza really is the big outlier.

As for yelling... yeah, I'll honestly take a couple benign criticisms here over certain places overreacting waaaay worse about it.

Lulua was a game entirely tied to a decade old game and they were already promoting Ryza by the time it came out, so it selling way less isn't really a surprise.

The fact that they made a functional (grammar mostly, though it has a fairly impressive vocab count for what it is) conlang, with several dialects, for that series will never not blow my mind. The worldbuilding put into it in general is pretty bananas.

I dunno, MK had this slightly more over the top cast of weirdo friends that I don't think Atelier entirely captures. Like you have the local oddballs helping you out but nobody is like Pepperoni or Goto if you get me.

I haven't played MK2 so I can't speak to those characters specifically but I can guess what you're getting at and yeah modern Atelier tends to have more grounded, less gimmicky characters so that's something that hasn't come back

Mana Khemia 1 id this thing where I couldn't like the writing because the characters were simultaneously one dimensional walking gags and supposed to be taken as people you care about and I couldn't do the latter because of the former but I couldn't just laugh at it because I was upset about not being able to do the latter. Mana Khemia 2's cast not really even trying to be sympathetic let me roll with the dumb comedy. Like between the two I'd rather that they'd picked people you care about but just picking one and sticking with it was a big improvement. I have seen like one other person feel this way ever.

My final opinions on the MK cast are:

Vayne: extremely boring
Jess: kinda boring
Nikki: my powerful beast friend
Pamela: fine
Flay: way too gimmicky to be a major character, should have been a minor character
Roxis: boring
Anna: fine
Muppy: thanks I hate it

Nikki is great but she's the only one I particularly like. I liked Flay at first but there's too much of him, his gimmick isn't interesting enough to support that amount of screentime

Gust has been big enough to release 2 games a year since the PS2 days, i dunno if they have multiple studios but they're not tiny and probably have a pretty refined workflow.

DQ11 having bosses have mp, waste turns if they are out of mp, and give me multiple ways to attack mp is quite nice.

Pacing is kind of screwy; please do this lengthy run back and forth self-contained quest, ok now do this dungeon that takes like 15 minutes and you just summarily get a quest item at the end and it has no relation to anything or story. Ok now back to running up and down a gotdang mountain except one time after a cutscene it warps you halfway back but only the one time.

Whatever I feel like Im probably nearing on the end of the first third of this game because theyve only recently mentioned the big bad which absolutely means they arent actually the final villain.

gust is like. a lower-mid budget studio, they have enough resources to support development on one big series and a few smaller side ones but even their "big" series is very budget compared to others and when atelier wasn't selling so hot with the first two mysterious games and they kept throwing their weight into new ips that were super duper constrained, they were looking to be in pretty bad shape until lydie & suelle

thankfully now they finally have the success they need to revive welcome house and the adventures of robin lloyd

Mana Khemia was weird with its plot and characters where it was just wacky and fun for 80% of the game and then the actual plot hits you like a truck.

Mana Khemia 2 I have yet to finish because my likability of the main cast ranges from "general annoyance" to "wow I really hate you"

It was impressive with the one dialect in the one game. Then the other two games (three if you count Ar nosurge) added all their own stuff and made it that much more amazing. Gust should take the Ryza money and make Plus versions of the Ar tonelico trilogy. And then Blue Reflection 2.

I hated the MK2 cast until I treated like an british sitcom where everyone exists to cause suffering to each other. The double cast made some of the party members a bit samey in battle though.

Flay is also very good because I knew too many upperclassmen that fucks around with the younger kids because they have a big brother complex.

The MK2 cast was the best BECAUSE everyone was a complete rear end in a top hat. It made everything more enjoyable to me, especially seeing the two teams of assholes competing with each other.

But really, what I actually want out of a new MK is a new game with that really distinct and cool looking sprite art which is never going to happen sooooooo
