That is pretty hilarious, considering they really only needed a screwdriver and maybe 2 good whacks with a hammer to accomplish that goal vs the amount of effort needed to do that.

Points for being thorough, I guess.

I am sure I saw in one of the IT threads a similar anecdote about a customer doing that. Except they somehow managed to avoid putting holes in the drive itself.

Yeah I have a couple on the lid of my toolbox to hold tools on place.

They're basically there permanently because I haven't tidied my tools in so long I haven't been able to close said lid in at least five years.

FTFY. BattleBots is still a thing and they've been back on TV since 2015, first on ABC and now on Discovery. The latest season just finished the other day, and as you'd imagine almost every successful bot that's not a horizontal spinner is a wedge of some sort.

SUCK A MALE CAMEL'S DICK WITH MIRACLE WHIP!!
Re: hard drive destruction chat. I had a couple to destroy one time. One was plastic, like a CD so I just smashed the discs and to keep the CIA from reconstructing them, I dumped the pieces in various garbage cans around town to throw them off the trail of my tentacle porn collection.

The other, the discs were metal, so I brought them to work and took an arc welder to them. They melted quite nicely.

Theoretically, data can be read off old drives with electron microscopes.

In reality, overwriting the files with 0s makes recovery impossible. Overwriting with random data makes it really impossible. Something like dban that overwrites every sector with pseudorandom numbers mulitple times eliminates even the theoretical possibility of someone snooping through your old stash of :filez:

Any of these are really obvious signs of data destruction, which can be enough to drat you in many cases.

Storing things to SSDs currently renders forensic data recovery essentially impossible without being suspicious in the least, however.

Really? That's like hard drive decommission 101.

I mean, if you get ordered to hand your data over and then, oh no, it's gone! That's kinda destruction of evidence. But, I wouldn't think "I am throwing away an old hard drive and wanna get my personal information off" as suspicious.
