I think Target tried opening up here as well, until they discovered the reason Canadians were crossing the border and shopping at American Targets was not due to the luxurious, incomparable Target shopping experience, and all about the fact that everything is dirt cheap in the US compared to here.

I went down to our local mall for the first time in what feels like ages the other day and I was surprised at how vibrant the place was. Yeah there's a big ugly scab where Sears used to be but even that's getting re-fitted for a new client now and most of the storefronts were occupied. I honestly wonder why. Location's probably a big part of it (it's like smack in the center of the city); that and the weather doing hard shifts from +35 to -20 C depending on what time of year it is probably makes a large and well heated/air conditioned/not filled with smoke public space a somewhat attractive place to hang out.

I tried to buy a pallet jack from Target when they were all closing down but they wanted like 3 grand for it and no amount of haggling could get it down under my budget of "I have 20 dollars in my wallet"

Often the Canadian entity is actually a different corporation, and they don't always share infrastructure. Source: Just helped Staples Canada on a big software rollout to wean them off the US architecture. But yes, Canada sucks because of the sheer size of the place compared to the number of customers who live there. Add in quasi-good legacy government infrastructure and it means a bunch of people are living in prohibitively expensive out of delivery areas, and aren't subsidized by people living in the cities because there aren't enough of them.

Personally the only reason I shop at Target now is because it's the closest place that sells soap, light bulbs, and what have you.

And then the people from headquarters in Minneapolis completely ignored any suggestions from the Canadian side that any of these things might be a problem (what do you mean, it's not a good idea to supply a store in Newfoundland from Cornwall, Ontario?). Products routinely never arrived, leaving swaths of empty shelves, and the pricing was never competitive for the products that were actually in stock. Logistics issues for Canadian retailers are always worse than south of the border. Walmart has selection and stock issues in Canada, too, and I forget that Walmarts don't have to be an unpleasant experience when I go to one in the U.S. instead of a lovely one up here that looks like a throwback to 2005. Staples has the same issue; I bought something at a Staples in Michigan because that item just wasn't carried in Canada, and anything remotely comparable was 40% more than in the U.S.

Yeah I worked at corporate for a retailer that had heavy pressure to follow Target into Canada. The side that won was pushing a strategy of just opening more stores near the border instead . It was funny to see every executive claim they were on that side after it was apparent the disaster Target had.

Did Quebecois Target have French-speaking customer service reps? I had a friend that worked for a US/Canadian company and they were super careful to always answer customer phone calls in "French" language first, because I guess that is your competitive advantage in not-France Quebec. If so, lol. On the other hand, imagine the meltdowns if South-western US CSRs answered the phone in spanish by default.
