Re: hard drive destruction chat. I had a couple to destroy one time. One was plastic, like a CD so I just smashed the discs and to keep the CIA from reconstructing them, I dumped the pieces in various garbage cans around town to throw them off the trail of my tentacle porn collection. The other, the discs were metal, so I brought them to work and took an arc welder to them. They melted quite nicely.

Theoretically, data can be read off old drives with electron microscopes. In reality, overwriting the files with 0s makes recovery impossible. Overwriting with random data makes it really impossible. Something like dban that overwrites every sector with pseudorandom numbers mulitple times eliminates even the theoretical possibility of someone snooping through your old stash of
