Sash! posted:Two state reps in Pennsylvania just announced they are proposing legislation virtually identical to the California law. Good, I hope it passes, and fast. If enough states pass these laws, the NCAA will have no choice but to accept it. If the NCAA drags this into court, though, it could discourage other states from passing these laws until the matter's settled and then we'd be at the mercy of a federal court.

It doesn't actually go into effect until 2023 so they'll probably see what happens with the other bills and then challenge the California one under the commerce clause. I don't really buy it but they've used similar arguments in the past and it'd probably depend on the judge. If the bills in other states look like they're gaining momentum too I would guess they'll cave and modify their own bylaws to allow and regulate it, which they were already looking into anyway. Not to say their lawyers won't argue what they're paid for, but it's a waste of money.

Kentucky is jumping on the pay the players bandwagon insert Calipari joke here. Just one state rep drafting a bill, but it's something. Basketball related, but Louisville is consistently one of the biggest markets for the NCAA tournament, you really think the NCAA is going to leave UK and UofL out of it? That said, I watched my state not pass a sports gambling bill despite every state sound them doing it, and is now watching all that revenue go elsewhere, so I am not trusting them to do the right thing here either.

Which, again, I don't buy personally, but it's be an argument they've made successfully before. Ultimately I think they're gonna fold, everything is already headed towards this and it's also a way to head off the push for schools to pay players directly for at least awhile, which is what they really want to avoid.

Interesting case, thanks for pointing it out. Contracts clause is a tricky one. On a quick read though, I don't think the case fits will with the California law, especially if other states join. If I were the NCAA I'd try to float a salary cap (in total and per player) or something. But they're not going to be able to keep it """amateur""".

I think it only takes maybe 3 more "big" states to do this before the NCAA quits their poo poo. If some combo of Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Texas, South Carolina, or Indiana decide to do this, its done. Essentially if you could cover the majority of the perennial top 25, what is the NCAA really going to do? Tell 15 of the top 25 teams they can't do post season?

You know South Carolina and Georgia are definite 'nos.' Both are tight-fisted as hell and neither have fully moved on from Brown vs. Board of Education. White folks aren't about to give any other races money. If someone even goes and proposes such a thing, you'll hear MUH (GRAND/)DADDY WORKED THE FIELDS from Republican politicians and white folks a lot. Indiana had either the biggest population or the biggest percentage of Klan members in the 1920s. It's not changing, either.

RC and Moon Pie posted:You know South Carolina and Georgia are definite 'nos.' Completely agree with the opinion on South Carolina. In the mid-2000s, the student body at Clemson made a push to address the rapidly increasing tuition by contacting the state representatives. The response letter was pretty much literally what you wrote except the respondent used himself as an example because he was in his 70s. He stated he afforded the entire thing by working through college and everyone was essentially a bunch of lazy, entitled shits (shocking how some messages never change). Of course he completely missed the point that tuition is ~500% higher per year when adjusted for inflation compared to when he attended. My point of the entire thing is that this was addressed to a majority of white kids, so I completely agree that they will shut down any attempt to benefit minorities/young people. On the topic of football, Clemson's offense remains relatively unpredictable. Trevor Lawrence's stats seem overall unchanged from the previous season aside from the media perception. There does seem to be a significant issue with consistency in whether or not the team is cohesive in its performance. Overall, I am not terribly optimistic about playing teams like Oklahoma/Alabama/tOSU this year.

I think y'all are mistaken. Georgia and South Carolina will cave the instant UGA and/or SC has to field the chess club because every single football recruit has decamped to a state where their efforts are compensated.
