BIG HEADLINE posted:says the guy still gets cited for damaging two pieces of equipment because . This. Regional airlines treat their rampers worse than flight attendants, which is saying something, and the push towards outsourcing everything just exacerbates the issue. As an example, the airline I work for has their own rampers in Seattle, and since our parent company successfully argued the minimum wage doesn't apply to them, they make less than the guy flipping burgers at the McDonalds in the terminal. Since the pay isn't great and the working conditions suck, turnover is absurd, and we'll threaten to fire them for getting a flight out late, even if the problem was down to the cheap equipment we give them or the perpetual lack of staffing on the ramp.

azflyboy posted:This. Same here. A rampie I know said in the summer when the weather is truly unbearable with all the safety gear on, they have 40% turnover PER WEEK. If you stick on for a month, you could have seniority on your shift. Pay is still less than in the terminal, and roughly half what the guys over on the Amazon ramp make.

I hired in for one of those Seattle airline ramp jobs almost 20 years ago. A few months prior to that a young guy was killed as his baggage tug pinned him against the plane. I was told there was a habit for people to leave them in gear and just pull the parking brake lever. He rushed to get some last minute bags to the plane and had them sitting in the passenger seat of the tug. As he was opening the cargo door a bag slipped off, hit the brake release and the tug crawled towards the plane. He tried to push back against it to keep it from hitting the plane.

Charles posted:lol yeah I like supporting my hometown airlines but I'm not super proud of that. Between the minimum wage thing (every other airline at SEA was smart enough to hide behind a trade group), encouraging employees to vote for specific people in local elections, and sending out random unsolicited emails saying that Air Group opposes a higher minimum wage, I'm thinking Alaska should just change their billboards to read "gently caress you, Seattle!", since it's way more accurate. azflyboy fucked around with this message at 20:53 on Oct 1, 2019 |

I fly out to Seattle on Alaska roughly once or twice each year, and while I've every intention of spending my miles on free flights, does Delta treat their ground crew at SEA better? I know they're trying to knock Alaska's dick in at SEA while also making it their US>Pacific International hub, but I'm willing to reward a company that treats its workers even slightly better in exchange for slightly higher fares.

I’m not sure. Alaska now outsources the ramp work to themselves (it’s done by McGee Aviation, which is just a division of Alaska), and I think Deltahas an identical setup with their own spinoff company. Both Alaska and Delta fought the minimum wage hike (and Delta had the “instead of union dues and a living wage, YOU CAN BUY VIDEO GAMES!” posters in break rooms, but were smart enough to hide behind a trade group at SEA), so they’re probably equal levels of rear end in a top hat to ramp workers.
