Sounds like she's proposing the public option version of Medicare for All. And strengthening mental health care requirements for the people who keep private health insurance. It took a lot of reading between the lines to get there, though. The mental health system nationwide will still have the problem California's having though. There isn't anywhere near enough capacity to meet demand.

I mean, if college is free you can train up a bunch of people relatively easily if you guarantee jobs in that field.

Also, there is one Medicare for All, it's the bills actually introduced in the house (by Jayapall) and senate (by Sanders). Honestly I prefer Jayapal's since it phases in faster (reducing the amount of insurance company fuckery during the phase in), and covers long term care. Everything else using the same term is purposefully trying to muddy the waters.

The "public option version of Medicare for All" is not Medicare for All.

You're right that we need to push at all levels.

Here's a list of good candidates that are primarying lovely Dems or running to go against especially lovely Republicans. Let me know if you think there's anyone who should be added to it and why.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1l4OSW_lm_0cMR5JLVlvAlKlyaYq-35xLu_pbNCoAdG4/edit?usp=drivesdk

I would encourage anyone who can afford to to donate or volunteer for them.

And yeah, some people think they need to preserve the structures that crush most of us into a lovely hard scrabble existence because one day they'll get to be doing the crushing. But you don't have to convince everybody, just enough to seize power, and then actually materially improve the lives of 90% of Americans. A lot of people who might otherwise be skeptical are likely to be less so once they can just go to a doctor, their rent isn't half their income, they don't have to keep trying to pay off medical or student loan debt, etc. At the least they're more likely to stay home and grumble instead of mobilizing to support your opposition.

On that note, the Texas GOP in both national and state houses are retiring in droves. The GOP itself in Texas is having a small disaster where the moderate current House Speaker may or may not have encouraged a Tea Party group to go after fellow moderate Republicans in exchange for media credentials(wtf lol), and talked poo poo about those members. There is a recording of this that hasn't been released because neither side can actually figure out if its good or bad to do so. Our legislature meets for approximately 3 days every 2 years so we need special sessions to do anything and despite everyone wanting one so we can pretend to do something about gun violence, Abbott won't call one because they'd have to deal with this poo poo instead. Its not going to turn Texas purple, but there is now just enough resistance in the state from Democrats to force people not to just coast along election to election.

If Bernie makes it to the finish line in the Democratic primary, then congrats, but if he drops out for some reason, and you decide not to vote, or write in Bernie anyways in protest, then you're part of the reason that the Republicans continue to win, because they can count on Democrats to internally bicker and tear each other apart while they have built a monolithic political machine to gently caress over poors and immigrants.

Democrat voters fail to show up to the polls which hands the W to the Republican candidate sure sounds like how they lose.

If you don't vote because you're protesting then you're helping the objectively worse Republican candidate win.

Literally 45% of all eligible voters. About 40% of those who don't vote it's because they don't like the candidates and don't feel like either candidate will actually change anything.

About 9% is registration problems, or not being able to get to a polling place.

I'm not up on Texas sentences, but that's pretty average for murder in NYC if you have no priors.

Texas is clearly different because the juries deciding the sentence is not a thing in New York.

joat mon in the detainment thread says that the way Texas decides between first and second degree murder is that the jury picks the appropriate sentence during the penalty phase. The potential range for 2nd degree murder in Texas is between 2-20 years. I wonder if the jury just said "ok we think its 2nd degree, just take the middle of the range I guess, lets go home"

It's not first or second degree murder. There are no degrees in TX. She was convicted of murder, which is a first degree felony. It is possible to reduce that to a second degree felony at sentencing if it was a crime of passion, but this was not.

Learning about how Texas does criminal.justice reminds me that we have 50+ legal systems in this country and they all do things differently.

poo poo, we effectively have seven different legal systems in New York depending on if you are charged federally, by a county DA or by the special Narcotics office

Whats the jury instruction really like for this? Is it just write the number of years on the blank or something? That seems like a recipe for very, very random results because 12 people would have to agree on a number.

I don't think anyone on Capitol Hill knows what to make about the State IG briefing.

It looks like some wingnut (in an administration full of them) sent a 40-page packet of poo poo, in Trump Hotel folders, from the White House to Secretary of State Pompeo, which had a bunch of bullshit about the former Ukrainian Ambassador that's set to testify.

This seems to be the basic anti-impeachment strategy of airing out as many batshit insane conspiracies and lies to get through it. It might work, but I still don't see any of it convincing currently nonverbal Republicans. And it still doesn't account for any of the actual materials getting out, or the "transcript".

I'm thinking it's a "me, or your lying eyes" play.

Not average (for non LEOs) in Oklahoma. (Which also has jury sentencing)

Does Texas take prior convictions into account? Prior convictions can turn a no-jail felony into significant time.

For first degree felonies, it looks like one prior turns 5-99 into 15-99, two or more into 25-99.
