You are correct, this was never a problem on winphones because there were no apps

no, because they would be in the app list. it didn't matter how many apps you had because it worked well for 10 or 100. with ios you have to Linux it up and arrange everything or just leave it as a mess. neither option is good.

branding aside, why would it? windows 10 x is for some dual screen nonsense that doesn't exist yet as an actual product

surface pro x is just the latest iteration of windows on arm, with a single screen. they made an ipad pro priced ipad pro knockoff, that can kind of run windows software really poorly

in the wsl2 architecture the guest os is run as a separate 'vm' by the hypervisor, but it's integrated with the host os. the same poo poo should be doable for android, win32, etc in wcos. but there is no way google would sign off on that.

unless you're talking about the google play store, they could totally do android vms without google needing to sign off. that's what the winpho stuff was basically gonna do before it didn't ship because it was really lovely (both the idea and the implementation)

chestnut santabag posted:

surface pro x actually runs more of actual "windows" than the neo, and has win32 support + x86 compatibility. so it's actually useful, unlike the neo.

well, the google play store, google apps and services, including all the core phone functionality they've shifted out of aosp, and any APIs that directly rely on those. so a fair chunk of the android platform

The system call translation layer that they repurposed for WSL was originally intended for running Android apps and IIRC they had it working before they abandoned it.

the idea of information scaling is impossible to do smoothly in a compact UI since the actual info you want is of an arbitrary shape

it was great for things like weather and news headlines and upcoming calendar things and somewhat for mail too. unlike mail.app which is a stupid piece of poo poo, win10 mail was designed by someone who had used a computer before. on both the tile and the badge it shows new messages/counts since you last looked, rather than total unread which is totally worthless. its really really nice but if you've only ever used bad software like mail.app you probably would consider it as an option. even if you just see sender name and ignore the subject its very useful in helping you decide if you want to open the app

the widgets on ios are like a shittier implementation, but similar in function if less useful.

wrt scaling if you make the tile too small for useful information then congrats you have an app icon which is identical to what you have on every other os. for those where information can be presented you can then size them appropriately.
