I think the biggest thing affecting this chart is that since the 70s you see more and more immigration, much of which is from areas of the world where it's normal to live with your parents up to the point you get married and then buy a place, or even where your wife then moves into your house and you live with your parents forever (south Asia). I live in Canada but most of my friends who are second generation immigrants from India either live with their husbands and his family or live with their parents and their wives have moved into their family house. Most of my Chinese friends who are second or third generation immigrants don't move out until they get married and buy a place. None of my Caucasian friends live with their parents. Obviously one thing isn't better than another but it certainly skews this kind of bar chart.

By far the biggest factor for the parent bar is probably the housing market. I moved out when I was 27, there was just no way I could have had a reasonable mortgage without having worked and saved money for a few years. Maybe immigration plays a role, but I don't think it's necessary as an explanation.

The spouse percentage is also easy to explain, the average age at marriage has increased enormously since the fifties, and many people (whether in a relationship or not) never get married at all.

STFU if you don't know what you're talking about. The US has a population of 330 million and a net immigration that I'll generously round up to one million a year. There are real systemic changes causing that graph to flip the gently caress out like that, not just "stupid immigrants don't know how to move out."

How on earth did you take my post to be anti-immigrant? Relax please. I'm in the same boat and can't buy a house my man don't worry. This illustrates the point I was actually making and not a strawman argument about racism or something:

at ~10% and not all from Asia it's less than I would have thought for sure but I feel it's still significant.

They also didn't say whether people living with their parents AND a spouse were counted under the former or the latter.

Because I've been an immigrant in a few different countries now and I've heard this "hmmm... look at this bad societal change... 'I think the biggest thing affecting this chart is that since the 70s you see more and more immigration'" and it's at best lazy, uninformed postulating that simply affirms negative stereotypes and can be much more malicious too. I'm not going to harp on any longer and I'm not saying you're a bad person but it was a bad post.

I can see how someone with your experience could have taken my post to mean that - I should have been more clear that I didn't mean 'good ol white guys can't buy houses anymore because of immigrants', but just that the chart may not reflect what most people would take it to reflect at first take.

The TOTAL IMMIGRANT POPULATION % went up by 8%, while the % living with parents of ONLY EXACTLY 26 YEAR OLDS went up 18%. I think you are not using all of your noodles.

To be fair, immigration probably does a play a role in the sense that it's put additional pressure on the housing market, at least in the regions of Western countries that people would actually want to live. But that's just one of several factors in a story of supply and demand, and the biggest victims of that increasingly restrictive market are disproportionately (descendants of) immigrants themselves.
