So are we going to see an official response to the Companies House filing or to the Sunk Cost video? Are they going to rouse Ortwin from his coffin? Is Sandi going to tearfully pretend to leave social media again? #istranglewithsandi

The movie was a satire, the novel has a pages long diatribe smack in the middle as to how it's the only way to have a proper society.

zebedy posted:to me the iconography in that youtube video i posted signals "dystopia". its creepy and authoritarian. but as far i can tell its played totally straight? Yep. Lorville looks like the movie Brazil, down to the ubiquitous billboards and the giant pipes spilling sewage, but it’s supposed to be a fun place to visit The plastic bag helmets also creep me the gently caress out, because all I can think of is Heaven’s Gate.

I've read most stuff by Asimov, Clark, PKD, but I never read anything by Heinlein. I have seen Dallos which is allegedly based on The Moon is Harsh Mistress, but that's about it. The movie is unbelievably good. It's got that knife's edge subtly. I might actually watch it later tonight.

The problem isn't that it's juvenile and derivative, the problem with SC lore is how amazingly bland it all is. CIG dogmatically copies sci-fi settings and tropes but at the same time they somehow suck all of the life and fun out of it. I've read awful sci-fi/fantasy vanity press published books filled with Mary-Sues that still have more compelling lore and setting then Star Citizen. I'm one of the guys who scans everything in Metroid Prime or collects every scrap of lore in Mass Effect but I can't slog though the bland crap CIG spews out. I found the Fourth Stimpire insanity easier reading then that stupid RSI lore dump.

tooterfish posted:We've talked about it before here, it's uh, not that subtle. Oh subtly in the sense you don't know if it's "for real" or if Verhoeven is making a subtle criticism of the whole concept. Although to be fair, back when I first watched it (on VHS no less), I thought of it as an action movie with lots of alien rear end getting kicked. But then again I was pretty young.

"Grown" "men" lining up to fellate a corporation that steals from them, while viciously attacking anyone who thinks there's anything odd about that, is pretty much the dictionary definition of spooky. I'm gonna have to give CIG the win on this one by default.
