I'm going to Vegas for 2 days in November with my friend and our plan is just to play blackjack/craps the entire time we are there. From what I read if we are looking for 3:2 blackjack with low minimums our best options are Treasure Island and Ellis Island. The room rates for the weekend we are going are about the same. Is there a substantial difference between either one?

I don't know about the blackjack levels, but Treasure Island is a real casino on the strip with all the normal giant Vegas casino things, Ellis Island is behind the strip and about 10x smaller and the Ellis Island hotel is (I think) literally a Super 8. TI is next to the Fashion Show mall so you'll have lots of normal priced food options right there too.

I like Ellis Island for the brewery and the dive bar charm but I would definitely choose Treasure Island if it costs the same and has what you want.

Decided I want to go to Red Rock, so renting a car and just dealing with parking at Planet Hollywood. Any advice on solo hiking at Red Rock? I am looking at doing Calico Tanks Trail (probably early Friday morning).

It's 10am here now and my pool's temperature sensor reads 108 degrees (even though the weather says 96). The sensor on the roof reads 121 degrees. So I would say it's hotter than you think in the sun, plan to get there as early as possible (before 7am) so you don't die.

You might also look up Valley of Fire, which is about 30-40 minutes more of a drive from PH but is a really neat place too.

Italian:

Scarpetta, Carbone, Lago, Costa Di Mare. That's the list don't bother with anything else on strip. Off strip there's a couple great spots but it kinda depends on what you want in an Italian meal.

Sushi:

Kame, Yui, Kabuto. In that order for best in Vegas. If you want to go further off strip Sen Of Japan. If you want to stay on strip, Nobu, Yellowtail, Mizumi, Sushi Samba, maybe Catch for the see and be seen aspect.

Heading to Vegas for the first time in Jan. I planned this trip around the Pens/VGK game. Do tickets normally sell out pretty quickly? I see they are on pre-sale now, but not to the general public on Monday. Just seeing if I should be ready to buy right at 10 on Monday. Thanks!

Yeah they’ll sell out very quickly, be prepared for a total poo poo show trying to buy them if last year was anything to go by. It’ll also be one of the most overpriced games on the secondary market.

If you can handle the stress, just wait until right before/right after puck drop to buy on the secondary market. I've heard about glass seats going for under $100. Brokers will panic and drop prices just to move tickets. FlashSeats had a way that you could put in lowball offers on all tickets, but I'm not sure if that will be available on AXS this coming season. But you run the risk of missing out on getting the tickets or having to pay the absurd prices no matter what. Hey it's a gamble. That's why you come to Vegas.

Thanks for the info. That's the only reason I was worried about it selling out. I'll see if I can get any on Monday when they go on sale, if not try getting some right before the game.

I have season tickets. My favorite money grab was starting in 2018-2019, they had a $3 per seat per game charge for "arena improvements". For an arena built in 2016.

So yeah... $250 for standing room sounds about right.

Trip report: Kabuto is the best sushi I have ever eaten and I honestly expected to pay more. The service is very, very good as well, and quite friendly too. Was greeted by chef upon entrance, contrary to some reviews. Go here and eat well. Under $200 pp.

Lotus of Siam still legit. Panang curry with crispy duck was indulgent, rich, crunchy, pretty perfect. Thanks again Jay.

Best Friend has some tasty food but considering we paid the same for Lotus, I'd sooner head back to Lotus. Beef taco and uni rice were memorable.

Next time you're in you've got to try Yui and Kame, IMO they're both better. Kabuto is fantastic as well obviously. Glad you enjoyed Lotus.

Jay- speaking of Kabuto, do you recommend Sen of Japan or Kabuto in regards to the omakase? We have a couple of people in our group who aren't as spendy so unfortunately can't book Yui or Kame.

Here's the general rundown so far, we are there from Friday night to Sunday morning:

Friday night: Lotus
Saturday morning: Bouchon
Saturday lunch: OPEN
Saturday dinner: Sen/Kabuto omakase?
Sunday brunch: Bardot

What do you think of this spread? We are looking for recommendations for Saturday lunch as well, and if there's anything you would strongly recommend I can change anything I've set up so far including going somewhere entirely different for Saturday dinner.

By the way I have a weird question about Lotus: I wasn't thinking and booked a table for 3 instead of 4. At this point there are no tables left (dinner, November 1st). Of course, usually a table would sit 4, so can we just give them a ring and let them know that we actually have four diners, or is that rude?

I've never done the Omakase at Sen but Sen is excellent. Yui and Kame both have lower priced Omakase options that should be on par with Kabuto's price point though, I'd perhaps double check.

Saturday, Bouchon is a decent option. For lunch you could just do something touristy like Mon Ami Gabi or Hell's Kitchen? If you're staying at Venetian maybe Yardbird?

Yeah, just call Lotus and let them know you have 4ppl. If there's some sort of problem just message me privately and I'm sure I can get it taken care of.

Thanks Jay! You are right about Yui, it has a $120 omakase, so that's an option. I must have been looking at Kame as their omakase starts at 200.

Updated based on your recommendations:

Friday night: Lotus

Saturday morning: Bouchon

Saturday lunch: Yardbird

Saturday dinner: Yui or Sen Omakase

Sunday brunch: Bardot Brasserie

All set?

I personally wasn't super knocked out by Yardbird when I ate there. I live in the South, so I guess it's hard to impress me with southern cuisine - everything was competently made and well presented, but a lot of it didn't taste... correct? Probably won't bother you if you're not used to southern cooking though.

Mon Ami Gabi, on the other hand, was absolutely amazing. One of my traveling companions talked it up as his favorite lunch spot on the strip, and he was totally right. Some of the tastiest beef I've ever had (we all got different varieties of the steak frites) and the service was spectacular. I spent the rest of the trip wanting to go back.

To the guy asking about sushi: just did the omakase at Kabuto.

$48, $80, and $120 per person tiers of omakase. A la carte per piece thereafter. Opted for the middle plus a few pieces plus a bottle of wine. Left very happy.

Yui and / or Kame next time.

Mon Ami Gabi does look good and I admit I'm tempted. My only concern is that our itinerary already includes Bouchon and Bordot (out of 5 total meals in Vegas).

If we also go to Gabi, that makes 3 out of 5 of our meals French restaurants, is that a weird weighting? That being said I live in the bay area, so I never really eat at French restaurants due to the insane availability of terrific Asian/Indian food. In that sense going heavy on the French might be ok.

Thank you. Kabuto sounds delicious but at this point it's between Sen and Yui. There's a couple of price-conscious members of our group, and the Sen omakase is $90. I feel like that is a big mental leg up for them that the dinner is two digits. Yui isn't much more expensive at $120, but mentally they'll probably cry about spending 3 digits on a meal.

For example I had originally scheduled a meal at é by Jose Andres, which is a $275 tasting menu, and they wouldn't stop whining (which, you know, I get, fine). Frankly at this point I'm just trying to keep things reasonable lest I have a small rebellion on my hands. It just sucks because of our 4 person crew, 2 of us have effectively no budget and the other 2 have tight-ish budgets, so it's difficult to please everyone, but that is my burden as the trip planner.

Makes sense. Yeah, if you're already hitting two French places, branch out and do something else. Living in the Bay Area, you probably don't have much access to decent southern food (at least, I didn't growing up in the east bay) so give Yardbird a try. It was good, just didn't blow me away like I'd had people tell me it would. I bet you'll like it.

Oh, I didn't get to try é, but Jose Andres' other (more casual) restaurant in the Cosmopolitan is called China Poblano, and it is loving incredible. Asian/Mexican fusion "small plate" meals. The dumplings are delicious and addictive. I can't remember if they're always open for lunch - I feel like they kept weird hours when I was there last December.

Seconding that if you haven't eaten a lot of southern food and your only exposure is the bay area then do yardbird. Bay area southern cuisine is embarrassing.

I would consider doing non-omakase at Sen. It's really a fantastic restaurant and you can get away for less than $90pp for your more frugal friends and then you can go hard on the stuff you want to eat.

Raku should also get tossed into consideration IMO. Sweets Raku for dessert.

EDIT
Looks like there aren't actually many places you can actually smoke. It's illegal in public and banned by the casinos.
This lounge just opened up for "tastings" whatever that means. https://www.ktnv.com/news/marijuana/nevadas-first-cannabis-lounge-set-to-open-in-las-vegas

Now that I think about it, I'm going to rank my strip hotels:

Wynn/Encore
Aria
Cosmopolitan
Venetian/Palazzo
Bellagio
Caesar's
----
MGM Grand
Park MGM
Mandalay Bay
Paris
----
Mirage
Planet Hollywood
Treasure Island
Bally's
New York New York
Harrah's
The Linq
----
Luxor
Flamingo
Tropicana
Excalibur
----
The Cromwell
Sahara
Casino Royale
Circus Circus
Stratosphere

I think that's about how I'd rate them and they're broken down by tier. Some of them are probably movable within their tier but they're about the same. I didn't include hotels without a casino or ones that are attached like Vdara, or Four Seasons.

Yeah, it's not. They put lipstick on a pig, it's still Wild Bill's. The ease of entry is terrible on weekends, the crowd that hangs around is AWFUL and if you're a morning person you have to contend with them coming out of after hours. It's tiny, there's 1 restaurant that I know of and I was very underwhelmed by Giada's.

It probably deserves a spot higher on the list but, like I can't think of any real reason to move it up other than location. I dunno, I guess you could probably put it above Luxor?
