Why is it so hard to get a beer in Melbourne that isn't a $15/pint xPA, Goze, or Carlton draught these days?

I blame JBP for this gentrification.

No poo poo I went to 5 bars last night in both Collingwood and the CBD before and after dinner and it was pretty hard to find anything that wasn't sour or hoppy as hell overpriced boutique micro.

It's not GREAT in WA either, but it seems to have tilted a lot harder in that direction over here. Not a lot of variety.

I prefer wheat beers, brown ales or lager/less hoppy pales like fat yak for reference.

In inner suburbs like Collingwood with shitloads of pubs there are still a fair few with normal beers at normal prices
The Napier, the Union, Foresters, the Birmingham just in the Smith St area of Collingwood

I don't really go to pubs in the cbd very much but there are still a few of the more old fashioned places that sell normal beers

https://www.smh.com.au/business/workplace/restaurant-empire-behind-chin-chin-underpaid-staff-leaked-audit-20190919-p52szg.html

A detailed external audit shows that the high-end restaurant business that runs Chin Chin in Melbourne and Sydney underpaid staff by $340,000 in a single year, with one-fifth of the company’s workforce affected.

The audit by accounting firm Stannards measured actual staff wages for the 2017-18 financial year against the award at The Lucas Group Services Pty Ltd- a company owned by prominent restaurant owner Chris Lucas. The audit showed that in one financial year alone, 134 staff - or about 20 per cent of the workforce - were paid less than the minimum rates of the award, the wages safety net.

Through lawyers, Mr Lucas "vehemently" denied there were underpayments and said workers had been repaid in full - a claim disputed by a number of staff members interviewed by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald.

Mr Lucas refused to be interviewed on the record for this story, but in a separate interview with the Herald and The Age he called for an amnesty in investigations for underpayments to allow employers to make adjustments “without fear of being publicly attacked or fined".

He complained about media reporting of underpayments in the restaurant industry, said the employment law was too “complex”, and it was "almost impossible for even the most professional organisation to be totally compliant”. He added that he was "concerned about the mental state of the people that have been publicly hung out to dry".

The 15-page audit of The Lucas Group shows hundreds of thousands of dollars of underpayments occurred at all the company's restaurants including Chin Chin in Sydney and Melbourne, Kisume, Go Go Bar, Hawker Hall, Kong and Baby Pizza. It was most pronounced at Chin Chin Sydney which opened in October 2017.

The audit compared actual pay rates for nearly 700 waiters, chefs and other staff against what they should have been paid, and shows significant discrepancies. Some staff had been paid $10,000 per year less than they should have received as compared to the minimum rates of the award. The Age and Herald are not suggesting that Mr Lucas consciously underpaid staff.

Accounting firm Stannards did not respond to requests for comment.

Law firm Holding Redlich, acting for the company, threatened legal action against the newspapers unless they destroyed their copy of the audit. They also demanded a list of all people we spoke to about the audit. The Age and the Herald have not complied with the request.

Even bars that specialise in craft beer ought to have at least one lager and pale ale. Even if you like drinking IPAs and sours, having something milder is a nice palate cleanser.

I can't think of anywhere near me that doesn't have mid range pale ales or similar. Same for Collingwood and the CBD, but I don't really go to the northern suburbs except for the Great Northern and Rose.

Eh, the pubs that have been suggested so far (which are generally pretty fuckin good) are still running 6-10+ different taps, so it's pretty easy to find something entry level. It's the 'fancy' CBD bars/restaurants with less than 4 on draught that seem to have nothing that really pleases anyone.

Comedy option: go to the MCG bar

Other comedy option: the German beer barn in the middle of Chinatown

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-10-04/the-bushfires-of-the-future-are-here-black-swan/11559930?WT.ac=localnews_coffscoast
This year, the bushfire season began with the worst September in recorded history, with 55 homes destroyed. The Australian winter was only just in the rear-view mirror when 130 bushfires ripped through southern Queensland and northern NSW in one day.

Australia's former chief scientist, Ian Chubb, said it was clear the climate was changing. "It's not just some passing phase that it didn't rain this decade," he said. "The implications of that for fire are pretty obvious."

Former New South Wales fire and rescue commissioner and Climate Council member Greg Mullins said unprecedented conditions could give rise to so-called Black Swan fire events. "We're going to have fires that I can't comprehend, and I've been in the game for nearly half a century," he said. A Black Swan is something without precedent and thought to be impossible, until it happens. When it comes to bushfires, these Black Swans happen as our environment changes, creating conditions firefighters have never seen before.

Emergency experts and senior scientists have told a joint ABC investigation that a comprehensive national plan is needed to tackle the fires of the future, and they are concerned about the lack of financial commitment from the Federal Government for resources and research. "This is a national issue that all people in Australia, regardless of whether they are left or right, have a right to expect that we will face up to challenges that are ahead," Professor Chubb said.

'Asleep at the wheel'
Black Swans like the Sir Ivan firestorm are only going to become more frequent as our climate warms, according to Dr Karl Braganza, head of Climate Monitoring at the Bureau of Meteorology. "We're also seeing not just the change in the frequency of those events, we're seeing a change in the severity, so the worst fire danger days are getting worse," he said. An RFS spokesman confirmed firefighters started to see fire thunderstorms during the northern NSW fires in September.

Even though the threat of more unprecedented fire events is bearing down on us, Australia is not sufficiently prepared to fight them, according to Professor David Bowman, who specialises in how fire interacts with the landscape. "A lot of firefighting has really got to be done five years before the firestorm," he said. "You've got to be doing the prep."

So far, the National Aerial Firefighting Centre (NAFC) has managed competing needs, but general manager Richard Alder acknowledged overlapping seasons were a risk. Two years ago, the NAFC sent a proposal on behalf of all states and territories to Canberra for an annual increase of $11 million above its existing $15 million funding, which would contribute to contracting large water-bombing aircraft from countries such as the US.

They still haven't received a decision from the Federal Government.

Background Briefing has obtained documents that show the proportion of federal funding for NAFC has more than halved since 2003. Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management David Littleproud said he would raise the business case at the next Ministerial Council meeting. "We haven't made a decision around the aerial assets," he told Background Briefing. "We'll continue to work with the states in a mature way." He said the Government was cognisant firefighting resources were going to be needed for longer periods in more jurisdictions than before and was committed to finding solutions.

The cost of natural disasters is projected to reach an average of $39 billion by 2050.

In Australia, states and territories are responsible for disaster management, but the Federal Government does play a role in coordinating resources. "The Federal Government is missing in action," said Mr Mullins. "What I've heard from a number of sectors is that this Government fundamentally doesn't believe in climate change, doesn't think that anything needs to be done." Mr Mullins is one of 23 emergency services experts from every state and territory who have written to the Government, asking for strategic national firefighting resources to cope with climate change.

They have not received a response.
