The MSJ posted:Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell apparently when Fox first picked up the rights to this story it was gonna star Jonah Hill and Leo DiCaprio as the lawyer. I have absolutely no idea what the gently caress that movie would have looked like because I can only imagine them doing it in the same style as Wolf of Wall Street which, lol. Honestly even though I am definitely suspicious of the output of American Sniper director Clint "The Chair Whisperer" Eastwood, the FBI is also objectively incredibly awful and definitely hosed this guy over. I'm less thrilled about Olivia Wilde playing what looks like a caricature of an evil mass media journalist.

just watched Paths of Glory again a few days ago which just makes all these generic war glorifying world war movies lately feel tedious and backwards. I quite enjoyed a few Mendes and Nolan movies but you really cant catch me watching Dunkirk or 1917...like, I'm not 17 anymore.

and all the generic british dudes. Like, I like Colin Firth a lot (A Single Man is still one of my favorite films of the last 20 years) BUT him being the superior officer in this is so on the nose it feels like a funny or die parody.

When Eastwood did the miracle on the Hudson film he shoehorned in some made up plot about the FAA persecuting Sully. Considering the conservative backlash against the FBI since Trump got into office I’m pretty sure he’s hoping to further discredit the federal law enforcement (which is deserved.)

Sully was hella good, I have no problems with films fictionalizing real events if it leads to good, believable entertainment. People get too caught up on this sort of thing.

Counterpoint: Sully was loving garbage despite Tom Hanks being decent as always in it. A complete loving waste of time. Maybe even more so than that stupid Paris train movie, but at least I wasn’t stupid enough to sit through that one. Clint Eastwood movies are proof that just because something happens, doesn’t mean you need to make a film about it.

Just watched that, the Discovery trailer, the Expanse trailer, and the Lost in Space trailer back-to-back. Honestly couldn't tell where one stopped and the next began. Tonally, visually, and directionally they all seemed to be of the exact same mind. Surely there's a different way to approach space-based sci-fi in 2019?

I will always think of being the only person in a packed 100-seat theater who seemed to have any idea of what they were getting into; everyone else was either there because "Jude Laaaaaaaaaw" (like every high school senior and college student lady in the area) or "that Julia Roberts!" (every middle age woman), and boy when Julia yells "it tastes like you but sweeter" in reference to swallowing jizz there was a definitive mood shift as everyone else realized this was not the romance movie the trailers sold it as. One of my favorite theater experiences, didn't get to feel an audience so suddenly make a hairpin turn on a film until Spider-Man 3's "Peter's a dorky loser what thinks he's cool" montage/the jazz club scene like three years later. That one was more virulent, though. This was just... people getting really unsettled by the frankness.

Closer contains the best performances of all 4 of its principle actor's entire careers. It is a loving gem of a stage adaptation, on the level with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and A Streetcar Named Desire.

It was legitimately the movie that made me go “oh wow, Julia Roberts isn’t interested in being America’s sweetheart anymore at all”. She also has a great story about seeing it in London and the theatre bringing out ice cream for a treat during the intermission and her being like “uh, what” to the idea of having ice cream in the middle of a dark, harsh play about relationships

All of my friends and family hated it and critical reception seemed lukewarm at best, but it really worked on me as few movies have. It was upsetting and truthful and lovely. I just chalked it up to my messed up brain chemistry.

This looks depressing and good. It's interesting that Jim Gaffigan is in that role because (a) I can't imagine him in a serious movie and (b) he's had some scares with his wife IRL with brain tumors.

Granted, it's not a huge surprise since Nichols had already directed a few of the most biting relationship dramas of all time. Anyone who loves Closer owes it to themself to watch both Virginia Woolf and especially Carnal Knowledge.
