Oof, drat. I don't usually get to see that end of things from behind the retail counter. I did have a patient sweating and complaining that she left her beta blocker at home today, so I tested her and the auto reader came back 230/110. I told her to sit still while I got her a bottle of water and a dose of what was on her profile while we called 911 and she just.... disappeared by the time we turned around. Couldn't find her, no idea what happened. I hope she took my advice and went to the ER.

Perhaps we should do something about a society that is apparently so intolerable to live in that countless people are attempting to abuse whatever they can possibly get their hands onto to get a high.

Ok so when the Ukraine call transcript was first released it was kind of important that there wasn’t an explicit quid pro quo (that Trump specifically outlined on the call). However, everyone could see that there was an implied threat in Trump’s classic mob shakedown.
Trump naturally took to the defensive, insisting that there was no quid pro quo at all and the Ukraine president didn’t feel threatened or pressured at all.
And now the Secretary of State makes a speech where he basically admits “Hell yeah, we quid pro quo, we do it all the time and it’s actually cool and good.”

It's two things.

The first is people that have serious need that are pocketing and selling them. Every homeless person in east tennessee has endocarditis from shooting up drugs. patients who are just like, dealing with endocarditis will get their prescription and flip it for drugs, because someone on the street knows they need it. everyone has smart phones, they can all research what their symptoms are and what they need.

The other is people with whatever hoping they can get a serious ABx prescription. So like someone has whatever, usually an abscess or something and comes in asking for a 5th gen ceph, because they're valuable.

Huh, well that's equally interesting and awful. I'm trying to land a hospital job over here at site I earned all my intern hours, and I know the local patient population is rife with HiV. We're also poor as hell up here in Northeastern Louisiana and something insane like 40% of our city of ~39k live below the poverty line. Makes me wonder what our "drugs of abuse" are.

I can, unfortunately, second this. Adderall is, in broad strokes, methyamphetamine but tempered by delivery as a series of salts. People will abuse all sorts of things that on paper shouldn't even provide a high. Gabapentin, for nerve pain, may as well be heroin for how often some patients attempt weeks-early refills.

Is Gabapentin not supposed to give you a high? I had to stop taking it because it feels exactly like when I take too strong an opiate or when I have to take one on an empty stomach. Which is to say it still feels like I'm high but I'm too fuzzyheaded and nauseated.

WRT both Laure Engels Wilder and Climate Change the settlers on the American Great Plains have been victims of junk science cooked up to benefit industry from day 1. The aridity of the Great Plains was a known problem to basically anyone with an education, but railroads published junk science that claimed that plowing and settling land caused rain. This was sort of seen as a quasi-scientific, quasi-divine phenomenon that rewarded good Christian cultivation of the land. This did not save anyone from the droughts but it did give them the psychological cover to furiously deny their farming practices had anything to do with their failed farms.

Modern oil companies and paid shucksters telling the farmers on the Great Plains that fracking quakes and climate change and aquifer depletion are liberal conspiracies are not new, they are the continuation of a proud tradition of lying to the dumbass American farmer. After all, who gets the land when the farms fail? It was the banks and the railroads, now its fracking companies, and increasingly, private water capitalists. And of course agribusiness, the biggest buyer of distressed farms, existed all the way back in the Old West and is still around.

So wait a sec; people go on about Lysenkoism in the former USSR and how socialism is why agriculture wasn't as successful it could've been, but the US had their own version of failed agricultural practices based on wishful thinking this entire time? And largely because of capitalist motivations?!

It’s basically alcohol in pill form. The best way I can describe long term use of gaba is to say it’s like constantly being inebriated. You’re kinda dumb, forgetful, and mistake-prone...but you feel really good about it.

sorta different types of bullshit because the soviet scientists knew better by lysenko got in deep with stalin and that was that until kruschev and than mao adopted parts of it because he liked stalin and believed the various bullshit. but yeah pretty much. there is a great behind the bastards on lysenkoism and its effects in russia and china.

Nothing cool; just a generic PharmD that couldn't get a residency. The job market is in freefall and everything's on fire so I'm trying to at least get my student loans paid off before pharmacist pay drops too much more. Either way, I wanted to work hospital, completed all my intern hours at one and
.... the opportunity never came. Then Ocshner bought them out, fired the CEO, consolidated management between it and the sister hospital two hours away, and the new pharmacy manager is a new guy my age who graduated a couple years before I did when jobs were still available so he has ~experience~. I don't expect to get the job because it seems like they're getting statewide applications but I have to try.

As for STD's I don't have the local data but Louisiana's been topping the charts for years.

Keep in mind that everyone has different brain chemistry so a dose that gets you vibrating through the floor gets another person sky-high. I’ve noticed this with opiates as the few times I’ve been prescribed them I found them insanely pleasurable and totally understood how people could get addicted to them while most of my friends can’t stand them as they make them sick. Meat computers are weird.
