It's like Blazing Saddles. Modern bigots use it an example of "you couldn't make that movie these days because people are too sensitive!" while completely missing the point that the whole movie was about how racism is stupid and should be mocked.

It’s also why Idiocracy gets a pass for using ‘human being’ but watching old Eddie Murphy stand ups does not.

One is satire. The other is just hate and ignorance that is definitely an 80s zeitgeist.

It is extremely cringey watching old Eddie Murphy, and many other comics for that matter, who are/were ‘edgy’ in a previous era.

Plus complaining about "sensitivity" and "PC Culture" is little more than a proud declaration that you, as someone in the majority, wish to bully people in the minority who had the balls to stand up say "hey could you work a little harder for our sake?" See-- Dave Chapelle's last stand-up. It's not edgy, it's the safest thing you could possibly be doing.

It's why people who claim about "PC Culture"-- a complaint so trite and beaten down it was considered a throwback joke when I was a kid in the 90s--are obsessed about cherry-picking the more insane fringe of minority groups to use as representative examples for dismissal.

I've run communities, I get how frustrating it can be when some randos start screeching in your ear about your improper use of trans language despite your very best efforts, who are utter garbage at giving you proper education, but it's still not that hard to come to a compromise. The only reason not to is to proudly bully those randos in front of a crowd and strut around like that makes you a tough guy. It's not edgy, it's the safest thing you could possibly be doing.

See also the concept of fragility where someone who is not used to being properly critiqued or policed for their actions has an overreaction to compensate.

Idk. I mean on the one hand it’s clearly a good thing for trans people to get work in film, and what better role than that of a trans person. On the other hand, a big name actor like Scarlett Johansson playing a trans person in a movie is surely going to shed light on the issues and struggles that trans people deal with daily, probably getting more attention to the film that an actor no one knows.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that you should all listen to me, a cis white male, as my opinions on this matter.

Another problem is that hollywood likes pretty young women. Attractive people in general, but they really like pretty girls. So if they show a trans man pre-transition, they want that pre-transition actor to be able to present as a very pretty girl. Hollywood doesn't care about uggos.

Actors like Chaz Bono or Buck Angel look very male and it's hard to imagine them pulling off any pre-transition scenes as a pretty girl. Hormone treatments are very effective. It's easier to stick a fake beard and a muscle suit on a woman than to feminize a man's body.

Of course that all that also applies when doing stories about trans women, so it's really weird to pick cis man for the role there. It's easier for a post-transition trans woman to use prosthetics to appear male in pre-transition scenes than it is for a cis man to appear female in post-transition scenes.

They like pretty girls so much they choose them even to play ugly girls.

Like Charlize Theron, who is perhaps objectively attractive.

The real master touch if that film (borrowed from a petrol station, for a sad bachelor's party twenty odd years ago) is the guy randomly dressed as Biggles who leaves his WWI aviator's helmet on for his scene.

I don't know why my brain has remembered this, of all things.

Orange is the New Black cast Laverne Cox's identical twin brother to play her in a pre-transition flashback. The stars really aligned for that one.

My favorite Scarlett Johansson moment was when she got dumped by a humanitarian charity because she couldn't understand why they didn't want her being the spokesperson for an Israeli company that was building factories in Palestine.

I didn't know about this, and I gotta tell you as a big Tom Waits fan I made it about fifteen seconds into I Don't Wanna Grow Up before I killed it. I didn't even make it to the singing. Good work ScarJo.

You know that song "Downtown Train" that Rod Stewart had a big fat flabby soft rock hit with, back in the tail end of the 80s

That's a Tom Waits song. He sang that. He wrote it. There's a music video. Imagine him gurgling "Downtown" loving "Train".

Since the 80's all his lyrics have been co-credited to his wife Kathleen Brennan, so you can both be right!

(I legitimately think he has a beautiful voice, but I understand that to most people listening to him is the musical equivalent of having misophonia.)
