So they built the story that he had at some point been Born Again, repented of his well-documented sinful past and was now a 'baby christian'. We just need to support him and pray for him as he follows the path God has chosen for him. Eventually if he is a big enough loser they'll pivot to the "never liked that guy anyway" position. They'll keep supporting him since the alternative is baby-killing democrats, but it will be a sullen lesser of two evils kind of thing.
