i always wonder why they decide on intense study on that particular star out of the trillions or whatever. though i guess they are studying them all intensely you could tell me 1 scientist or a thousand scientists are devoted to studying HR8799 and it alone and i'd believe you

We've looked pretty closely at every star within about 300 light years. Most exoplanet detections are closer than that since our imaging methods are pretty restricted by distance. beyond that we've looked at ~1 billion stars with GAIA. when James Webb finally gets up we'll be able to see the other side of the milky way for the first time, so that'll open up even more poo poo to research.
