It was really surprising to see Brian Kilmeade go off like he did earlier today on the Syria issue. I wonder if he had the greenlight to go as hard as he did, or if he's going to be reprimanded. It's one thing to break with the president and criticize his decision on FoxNews. He was basically going what the actual gently caress in every clip I've seen. It was a bit refreshing.

About the article of spiteful people in Arkansas from a couple of days (and like 1500 posts) back: What stands out to me the most in this article is that these people are completely divorced from the material reality of the United States. These people don't believe anyone in their area makes 25 dollars an hour. They believe this is an objectively very large amount of money. They believe times are tough in the US in general and the government (both local and federal) is just spending money the US doesn't have left and right. They fundamentally don't believe the United States is a particularly rich country. I refuse to believe they can properly conceive of just how much money a billion dollars is, and thus how totally alien billionaires are o their situation. I don't think these people can actually comprehend just how rich American corporations are. They can not understand how massively they're being hosed over because the can't even see the top of the tower from their place in dumps. Hell, they're so busy scraping for pennies in the dirt they never look up to even notice the tower in the first place. These people's worldview is fundamentally wrong because they don't understand the material reality they find themselves in. The message that needs to get accross from them is that all the services and benefits and you name it that have been and continue to be taken from them wasn't a case of necessary belt tightening because they just weren't affordable anymore, but class warfare by the upper few. The focus needs to be entirely on those fuckers and how they've been hosed over by them. Point them at their real enemy, as it were. What I'm saying is that the dialectic of historical materialism and class warfare seems like the only way you might reach these people, if you could A) tell it to them in a vocabulary they understand and B) make absolutely undeniable the vast, ostentatious wealth the upper few in the US hold that has hitherto been invisible for these people.

You are basically arguing for Marxism here. You are not wrong, but I think it’s only part of what the US needs. Total structural reformation is in order as well as somehow changing the national psyche to purge the spitefullness, greed and selfishness that are the hallmarks of America. Your national identity is predicated on individualism and the rugged frontier spirit rather than collectivism and socialism. You don’t get Americans to hate the rich because they all want to become the rich.

That's the big aspiration they hold, to one day make that unimaginably large sum of money. You can't talk about taxing the poo poo out of the billionaires and have that resonate as long as these people believe that billionaires aren't so different from them. I think that's the real challenge, making it completely impossible to deny that billionaires are not like them and do not give a gently caress about them. Once that has been established, things can actually get done.

The answer to ‘how much money is enough to make you rich?’ is very situational and changeable depending on where you live. What is never in dispute as far as I’m concerned is that nobody needs a billion dollars. Ever. e: my comment about arguing for Marxism was not an accusation at all, rather surprise at taking a roundabout way to describe Marxism without saying Marxism. Helith posted:e: my comment about arguing for Marxism was not an accusation at all, rather surprise at taking a roundabout way to describe Marxism without saying Marxism. I did that because I don't think "just do a Marxism ok guys? lol" is very helpful. I felt strongly after reading the article that the specific analysis of historical materialism, ie. get across to these people the actual situation with respect to the wealth of the United States as a country and the wealth inequality within the country on an individual level and what that concretely means for their material welfare is the only thing that might stand a chance at breaking them out of their worldview. Because this seems to be the part where they are most heavily living in a (dystopian) fantasy rather than reality. Now admittedly reality is also dystopian, but it's of a different sort, and thus the actual solutions are different from the ones they currently can accept. Strange Poon posted:I'm sure I already know the answer but I'd like to hear someone more familiar with what's happening: How does this not open the door to firing someone for basically any reason, like your hair is too short as a woman? You have a lisp. You're not masculine or feminine enough. Do you have to PROVE someone is gay or trans? Does that mean you can force people to disclose these kinds of things? just saw this, and the answer is: exactly. you could (provided local or state law does not stop you) fire someone for any of those reasons. the fundamental argument that anti-discrimination advocates are making is that when employers fire someone because they are gay, trans, or gender nonconforming, they do so because they have considered sex stereotypes to determine whether that employee fits into one of those groups. for example, a homophobic employer might realize a man is gay because of his failure to conform with the things he thinks a "man" should do, and the worst way you can fail to conform with those stereotypes is by having sex with another man. similarly, trans people are fired for their insistence on dressing and conforming to (in a discriminatory employer's mind) the wrong sex. this is a bit of a clunky argument in part because we really don't use "sex" in modern conversation to talk about most of these things, we'd say gender, but Title VII of the Civil Rights Act bans discrimination on account of "sex" so we need to argue that that implicitly protects all LGBQT people because regardless of why you're discriminating against them, you're using sex in some form or fashion to make the determination that they are LGBQT. the good news is that regardless of the outcome of this case, a future Congress can insert the following into Title VII and pretty much fix it: "race, color, religion, sex, sexuality, gender identity, or national origin"
