Also, more sophisticated firearm technology started to make those military uniforms a lot more drab and inconspicuous.

Just googled them. Very interesting.

quote:

16th Century Punks
Landsknechts were exempt from the ‘sumptuary laws’ that dictated the colours and style of clothing each social class could wear. Maximilian granted his soldiers this privilege because, in his words, their lives were “so short and brutish.” As a result, landsknechts dressed in the most garish costumes they could devise. Slashed doublets, striped hose, tight or voluminous breeches and outrageous codpieces were all worn in a deliberate attempt to flaunt their status, intimidate their enemies and shock civilians.

Why do they all do this? Why chunter on about how many PhDs Merkel has? Every loving time

Racists: "We didn't fight the world war single handedly to let all these brown people come here from Poland."
The Centre: "hehe, so do you mean the first or second world war? You see I can count to two, dumb dumb. We didn't win the second world war single-handedly this was a combined effort of many allied countries including the Poles you so cruelly maligned. If you look here you can see a graph I made.... :words:"

This style of arguing seems to appeal to FBPEs uniquely, and thus they think everyone gets convinced by it. They love to pick up on technicalities, or appeals to authority, rather than any sort of convincing argument or narrative. I swear right-wing groups do this on purpose now just to get rage-responses and retweets.

Incidentally, the next country over, Bretonnia, also owes quite a bit to the HRE. Half its inspiration is from Arthurian legend, but the other half is from the Matter of France, the mythologised birth of the Holy Roman Empire under Charlemagne.

It's a common liberal trend and functions broadly the same way the right wing approach does, but for a different demographic. The right wing approach is shouting jingoism/racism because that functions as an expression of solidarity with their base, whereas the liberal equivalent is demonstrating how very clever and factual they are. It's two groups of people talking straight past each other because they have fundamentally different value sets, but the performance appeals to their base in both instances, despite lacking substance.

The left equivalent is guillotine memes I guess.

It's not actually just an FBPE thing - you'll see this exact same sort of defence wheeled out for, say, Johnson (implausible as it may sound that anyone thinks he's smart) by some monocle-popping Telegraph columnist when some uncultured oik dares to criticise him. Watching ex-RWM refugees like Peter Oborne slowly wean themselves off this mindset is genuinely fascinating.

I feel like that's more class and political alignment based, though, and often relates to the character of the tory ghoul they're Stanning for rather than any qualifications. FBPEs uniquely get the back of their man by reposting his CV every time someone calls them a melt.

The narrative ‘You and me are smart and dumb Brexiteers are racist’ is at least the second most effective narrative going; it’s plausible it would actually win a second referendum against ‘take back sovereignty’ etc.

Where’s ‘Brexit is terrible but we are going to do it anyway for wonkish reasons I am unable to explain to you’ is supported by about seven people outside this thread.

It's 'owning the libs' in reverse. Like those articles where Trump is 'destroyed' by a tweet reply, when in reality one of his powerfully depressed RSI-blighted interns mutes them, and Trump continues to destroy the country. Replace trump with boris as applicable.

There's a couple of factors that contributed (although to what extent is up for debate). Synthetic dies made colourfast dark colours possible, then cheaper than brightly-coloured ones, and the invention of the sewing machine meaning clothes could be mass-produced but (at least with the early ones) meaning anything more ambitious than trousers and a jacket had a massive price premium.

The bigger mystery for me is what the hell happened to the hat in the 1950s. I can only assume with the end of rationing nobody needed somewhere secret to keep their knockoff petrol coupons so they just stopped wearing them.

Men's fashion is all down to one dickhead called Beau Brummell. He was a 19th century officer who made friends with George IV. Prior to that most men wore very orante clothes, though Beau thought all men's clothes should be quite drab and be very tightly fitted suits, as well as shaving the face and other rules.

He died bankrupt and insane in France, but his legacy continues to this day in terms of formal clothing.
