It’s a very common practice for newspapers to publish opinion pieces by foreign officials like this. Happens all the time. There’s no reason to freak out about it once you remember that opinion pieces are not really curated for content in the way you want, and they aren’t meant to reflect the opinion of the publisher or the newspaper staff.

This is TRUE, but it's also why opinion sections are awful and the major newspapers should just straight up get rid of them

it's cool the president's brain doesn't work so he can both have the highest approval rating among republicans ever but also a quarter of his party wants charges brought against him.

yeah every one i've seen is around 20 percent. 25 percent of the population is kinda the default number for any given president (obama and bush both had "should be impeached" numbers around there).

My prediction is that not too far out we’re gonna see numbers supporting impeachment at 90% among Dems, 55% among Independents, and 30% among Republicans. What that means for an overall support I don’t know I’m bad at math and have no idea how many of each demo there is.

So then what does the newspaper get out of publishing this? Do they think normalizing genocide is worth some kind of prestige gained from publishing foreign heads of state?

Except that most people don't remember this, know this, or care. They will only see the tacit approval of it by the newspaper.
When I went through Journalism, this was talked about at great length as a problem in the industry because THE AVERAGE NEWS CONSUMER does not discriminate on what is published by the tiny heading saying "opinion."

Read any comments on a news piece that is an opinion, people either just take it as fact or lambast the newspaper for taking a side. No matter which way it's taken, it's approval by the newspaper.

I don’t necessarily agree with the practice. I just want to head off the inevitable “WaPo published terrible opinions and is therefore Fake News Media biased against the left” at the pass because the opinion section and news sections are separate.

look, it is completely normal to run Erik Prince's op-ed asking to become viceroy of colonial Afghanistan. there is no part of this process that reflects the opinion of the publisher or the newspaper staff. now here's "a venezuelan-american comedian," explaining why Ruth Bader Ginsburg being your spirit animal shouldn't stop you from putting US boots on the ground to get her daddy his job as Minister For Beating Any Unionized Workers To Death back.

My read of the post I was quoting was saying the opposite: that WaPo's Opinion section must be Real Bad because we, here in this thread, keep getting links to bad WaPo Op-Eds. I could be reading that wrong, of course, but it's certainly wrong to assume that their Opinion section is particularly bad based just on what gets linked here because that set will always be biased towards what will piss the thread off.
