True that, I don't discredit the movie for it. It made me feel uncomfortable to watch. I do have some mental illness in my family which probably made it hit me harder.

I like the way we retell stories over time using the same characters, so watching the Joker through a very laboured vintage Scorcese lens was pretty fun. Do Catwoman in Mean Girls next.

Who the hell was filming an unknown comedian at an open mic in a comedy club and then submitted that footage to a late night show?

The club itself?

Yeah I can see a comedy club filming it's talent and sending the tapes out to scouts for a fee. Whether a comedy club would have cameras during that time period is more questionable.

Phoenix was not very subtle throughout the movie, or least that's how I saw it. For instance, the mom and kid on the bus, as soon as his crazy laughter started and never stopped, I wouldnt think they'd need a card to see that he's got a problem. Have you ever been on a bus when there's someone with a definite mental issue like Phoenix portrays in that scene? The reactions seemed very real to me and I've unfortunately seen the situation play out in real life loving loads and loads.

That movie was a loving slog. I watched it with a friend, and the walk back to the metro was just one of us recalling some extremely forgettable scene and both of us groaning at remembering it. Him killing his mom was especially just... lol. The whole reveal was pointless, and him suddenly murdering her was so out of left field. Also the ending in Arkham, just, ughhhh. e: Positives, though: the set design owned. I loved how grungy the city looked. And Joaquin Penis was good? I couldn't pay attention over the movie hitting me over the head with him.

Yes, more than a few times and people tend to try to give that person a lot of space out of respect, fear or discomfort. At least adults do. I'll admit teens and younger are a wild card. It could be in the areas I've frequented, perhaps it's rougher in larger cities like NYC.

I’d love some more examples.

Would be interested in hearing more examples of this as well.

The entire weird deification of Nikolai Tesla among the Redditor generation pretty much started entirely because of The Prestige's depiction of the character. The movie debuted in October of 2006 and if you look at the google trends map searches for the dude the month afterward had exponentially more people looking up info about him. For things like that or Jaws making people hate sharks it's more people being made aware of a concept they weren't aware of already though, the Tipper Gore/Joseph Lieberman school of thought where basic human behavior is something that can be eroded by the morality of works of fiction isn't really comparable to say War Games making people in the 80s think that computer hackers could start a nuclear war with a phone call because it's their only point of reference for how networked computers work. Please dont forget people harassing actors who play villains in shows in the street or defending abusers because the character they play is sweet. Humans in general have a really hard time processing acting, which goes to show just how impressive a skill acting is.

I really loving enjoyed this film, maybe one one hand because I don't see movies very often let alone movies on a big screen and am thus easily taken in by big cinema, but on the other hand because i really related to the joker since i am similarly mentally ill and infantilized. idk. I really like the idea of using a comic book villain, a piece of trite pop culture that everyone has a basic understanding of, to do an in depth and deep movie with complex themes but i do feel like this was still a shallow comic book film. There wasn't a ton of thematic depth. There wasn't a ton of depth to the character. Basically, it looked pretty "good", sounded pretty "good" and the acting was really loving cool but it didn't leave me going "woah", it just titillated me well. I hope comic book films keep getting artsier and artsier, there's a lot of potential in them. Also, the rich developing a gently caress the rich movie is absurd. I would like to see a joker film addressing that. Maybe a joker film where the joker goes to see a joker film and gets frustrated with its pandering and masterminds some seriously sick poo poo in response. Basically I'm not looking for a solution, i'm looking for a catharsis. Loved the end scene, beautiful transformation. gently caress THE FBI WHAT GREAT MARKETING!

It's only when you're viewing it through the lens of Phillips' recent public remarks about how Political Correctness Gone Mad has killed comedy and rendered him a pariah for daring to make people laugh that it becomes malicious and asinine, like he thinks himself some sort of warrior poet speaking unpleasant truths to power and society for the type of dumbass lowest common demoniator comedy where you show a fat guy in a speedo and somebody quips "OK, that's just wrong". Why would you ever watch the hangover let alone rewatch it. Lol, jokes on you.

Not trying to be facetious, but, out of respect for the general tone of this thread I rewatched Taxi Driver tonight (it's on Netflix) and holy poo poo is this movie lucky it existed when it did. Dude creeps on a woman working at a porn theater who doesn't wanna tell him his name so he monologues, then stalks a woman for the next hour (even fantasizing about killing her), before becoming obsessed with a child sex worker who he saves in the most fedora fantasy way. The whole thing is accompanied by a dreadful saxophone focused soundtrack which you can never tell whether it's meant as a tone-deaf ally to the whole picture or just an out of date relic of a film score. Robert de Nero is impressive only in his deadpan reading of the script, but if you don't buy his lunacy he simply sounds bored.

Am I the only one who interpreted (or recognized as a possible interpretation) his mother's mental illness as being a fabrication by Thomas Wayne, who gaslit her and consequently forced her into an asylum? This theory is bolstered by: 1. Mother never showing any signs of mental illness prior to the revelation nor after - that is, no psychotic behavior, no delusions, no abuse of Arthur, and so on. 2. Scenes of her in the asylum merely show her sticking to her story (her truth, possibly the truth) and nothing beyond it; the doctors refuse to entertain her narrative, apparently any narrative that does not comport with Thomas Wayne's version of the truth. Wayne doesn't even need to explicitly tell the doctors to do this for it to happen, not like it's uncommon for people of that ilk to trust the word of a respected, successful rich man against a lowly house-maid and woman. 3. The only evidence we have regarding Arthur's possible adoption is Thomas Wayne's words. 4. Wayne punching Arthur. As if to say, "I am powerful, I can do what I please, and I will not tolerate anyone contradicting what I say. You are nothing and therefore my reality IS reality, and don't forget it." The movie does leave it ambiguous but I'm surprised no one's mentioned this possibility. Not that this is remotely impossible today but it's certainly even more plausible in the era in which this would've happened. vvv oh yeah vvv Perry Mason Jar fucked around with this message at 19:41 on Oct 11, 2019 |

(Spoilers of the same conversation) Adoption doesn't rule out Wayne being the father at all because having him in secret and her then adopting him to be his legal parent would fit with Wayne pressuring her.
