What's the ideological justification for peddling fake medicine to poor people (TCM)?

For lack of free speech and freedom of information the reason given in this thread was that learning about things was counter-revolutionary, but surely that doesn't apply here.

I know perfectly well what those random bags of pills are, but I'm looking for the explanation why TCM is such a big industry in China instead of, you know, having proper healthcare for everyone in a supposedly communist country. Is it anti-imperialist to die from preventable diseases because you ate sugar pills instead of antibiotics?

why is holistic and alternative medicine so big in the us? this poo poo isnt unique just to china. for as much backwards garbage folk beliefs the cpc got rid of you can only do so much especially with something that has been ingrained in society for thousands of years. traditional medicine is something that occurs around the world and for many is seen as a connection to one's culture.

He's also assuming that China doesn't have modern medicine. China recently self built a Carbon Ion therapy machine which is one of the most advanced methods of treating cancer. While it was discovered in America we still do not have any clinics that use the tech in the States.

Probably for the same reason that chiropractors exist in the US.

In my experience with Chinese medicine, TCM is considered "complementary" for serious illnesses. So a patient with a serious illness will be sent to a real doctor and be prescribed real medicine, and then afterwards the patient may go the TCM shoppe and get a bag of leaves to "mediate the qi" or whatever.

Best case, there might some antioxidants in the sticks and twigs that marginally help the immune system, akin to zinc or vitamin C supplements. Worst case, there's pesticide residue or toxic compounds that make the patient sicker. But the vast majority of the time, the TCM does nothing. Nothing except the placebo effect, which can actually be very powerful by itself. And TCM is generally pretty cheap.

So I suspect that's why TCM has stuck around. It's cheap and much of the time it actually produces an improvement in subjective well-being through the placebo effect.

edit:
Don't forget that a small fraction of TCM remedies may really be medically effective. If you can find and isolate the active compound and do a real clinical trial on it, you could win a Nobel!

Btw are active studies in TCM, many of are inconclusive but at very least it requires further research. Also, at least some TCM has overlap with Western herbal and palliative medicine.

Non-drowsy Dramamine is literally just powered ginger in pill form, seabands are based on acupressure, and everyone is fine with drinking mint tea for a sour stomach... etc

It is when people forgo more effective treatment is when it becomes an issue.

Well, no, obviously I'm not doing that, that's just your incompetent reading. But Marx, as sociologist and philosopher, was able to distinguish between the Russia of the 1860s, France and Britain of the same time, and the US. It may shock you to learn that he was a big fan of the last! At least in relative terms. I strongly suspect that people who are willing to throw out his whole analysis in favor of Lenin's -- which, by the way, may have been a tiny big self-serving -- haven't read any of it to begin with.

why are anti-vaxxers so common in the US that there’s an entire cottage industry dedicated to protesting school boards and providing advice on how to dodge vaccination requirements, and those same people are overwhelmingly into homeopathy?

There is a bit of difference in how TCM receives a lot of state support, including public universities and hospitals in China.

On the other hand, we have no public hospitals in the US at all and that sucks. Maybe if we did have them we'd have publicly funded osteopaths and chiropractors.

Do they have them in Canada or other western countries that don't have a completely evil public health system?

In France, the public health insurance scheme covers (partially) homeopathic "medicine" (read: sugar pills). They've only recently decided to review this and it's ending in 2021.
