BrutalistMcDonalds posted:https://twitter.com/Sophiemcneill/status/1183456461235486721 The exact phrase was "粉身碎骨". Its meaning is comparable to "torn limb from limb" in English. It's mostly used to describe dying in vain for a cause. It is pretty gruesome but a less loaded translation might be "anyone trying to split China will die in vain."

Darkest Auer posted:The Party is actively promoting it though and you don't have "traditional medicine" as an alternative to actual healthcare in real countries. Traditional stuff as a connection to culture is just fine, except in this case it's actually killing people. During the Cultural Revolution and the 90's there were in fact crackdowns on "superstitious" TCM elements, but the practitioners weren't being issued citations, they were arrested and sent to labor camps. This drew severe domestic and international backlash. The party's relationship with TCM can be described as grudging acceptance and incorporation into 6,000 YEARS OF HISTORY propaganda after various attempts to modernize or eliminate it. Most Chinese people seek out the best scientific medicine available and use TCM as an adjunct therapy. They prefer doctors to folk practitioners and seek out the most modern care they can find. No one is forgoing grandma's heart surgery in Shenzen in favor of a bag of herbs. On multiple occasions I would see expats ask native mainlanders if they knew of a good TCM practitioner and the response was always some variation of "You're rich, why don't you go see a real doctor you idiot?"

It literally means what it says. If Tsai try to escape to Guam after she declear independence, she will be shot down by ground to air missile. This was not said for the students in HK. But they are free to think they are important enough to enjoy that phrase. This was not said for the none Chinese speakers either.

Tsai isn't about to declare independence when there's like three further Green parties/factions assembling to challenge her who would gladly do it instead, and if she was to flee to a south Pacific island she'd probably go to one that actually recognizes the ROC

A little late to the party, but TCM is fully integrated into the standard state healthcare system in China. That is, if you go to a state hospital (Nth People's Hospital of $city), you will see a doctor, get a prescription, go to pay for and collect your prescription, then see the doctor again for directions on its use. Unless you specifically and repeatedly request otherwise, that prescription will be for both TCM and actual working medicine. If you show up without the TCM portion on your second doctor visit, they will want to know why, and may get annoyed / refuse to consider your case further if you're going to be uncooperative. Chinese healthcare for simple / external issues is kinda brutal but effective, and definitely priced right, but TCM seems like a drag on the system that is very thoroughly integrated. Also, from the research side, a lot of state funding is thrown at desperate attempts to squeeze more actual / observable effects out of TCM whether they exist or not.

one thing i miss about chinese doctors is their willingness to throw a ton of medicine at you to make you go away "oh you have bronchitis? heres a big bottle of codeine pills have fun"

In Hong Kong, doctors have their own pharmacies so prescribing way too much medicine is a profit center for them. You'll always come out with 4 different bags of pills and 2 bottles of liquid medicine when you go in for a cold.
