i just watched "they remain" from 2018. its a pretty, ominous little movie about two scientists who are sent by a corporation to a remote stretch of forested wilderness to investigate strange wildlife behavior and determine whether it has any connection to a thrill-kill cult that operated on the land decades ago. it has some beautiful cinematography and plays wonderfully with paranoia and delusion through dream sequences, fantasies and hallucinations. as a narrative technique it focuses every scene on one of the scientists, and builds the tension by never letting you see what the other is doing. the climax of the film is a little abrupt and it never goes so far as to tell you what is happening, but the feverish atmosphere and excellent music makes it a good time

i'm pretty sure that the implication is that the land is a blister on the skin of reality, a thin place where some other place can bleed through and it makes people and animals descend into madness. they discover evidence of killings going back centuries, and the titanic ram's horn that appears in their camp one day is a relic from this other place. jessica succumbs to the malign influence early on and keith resist until the very end when he crawls into the cave to find her, and is indoctrinated into the cult, which has gone underground in the intervening years

I love the "white people go into the woods & get owned by a folk cult" subgenre. The Ritual on Netflix is really cool if you haven't checked it out yet. It has a very slow buildup, but once they find the abandoned cabin it just never lets up on the tension. One of the coolest monsters developed for a recent horror movie as well.

That and Apostle, which is absolutely phenomenal.

Apostle is great because it asks the simple question of what we'd do if God's providence was a real thing that could actually be gamed. Turns out, bad things!

i'm convinced that a big reason why nu-metal was popular was that middle-school aged boys in the late '90s wanted an alternative to boy bands. i should know, i was one of them

Yeah. It's one thing to like superhero movies. It's another to think Marvel Movie #3234 will be remembered in 20 years. Remember when Sam Raini directed Spiderman? No, you don't, and the cultural zeitgeist will forget these cookie cutter movies as well.

Also, the whole question of nerd identity and the novelty of the "new".

still amazes me that they just went and sold all their super expensive costumes before they got a hold of the secondary distribution revenue cant decide whether the producer for that project was just an idiot or deliberately trying to rip them off because they absolutely did not need to do that and could have easily made a sequel if they had realized that box office take was a completely meaningless metric for that kind of project

That's what gets me, is I've asked a few people if they really think any of the Marvel movies come even close to being able to look into the eye of Goodfellas, Casino, or Raging Bull. And they always say it's an unfair comparison, which is exactly what Scorcese is saying. Witch you would think they'd realize, but no. So I've just started comparing them to other great pop culture movies. Like are any I'd the Marvel movies as good as Raiders of the Lost Ark, or what I think might be the best Marvel movie Winter Solider, is even close to being a better super spy movie than Goldeneye?

They're still allegedly working on the show but everyone's been quiet about it for a bit

But Rob Williams, one of the best modern Dredd guys and head writer for the show, has been relatively quiet wrt output in the prog lately so who knows

Any thoughts on mother! by Darren Aronofsky? I was surprised by much I liked it considering how bleak it is. It's basically the history of Christianity through the lens of Mother Nature.

Another good "young woman is tormented by the patriarchy" movie is The VVitch.

I honestly don't get the claims of the movie being misogynistic (i'm a woman, if that matters) when it so clearly wants you to empathize with JLaw's character.

i haven't watched any of the MCU movies, and i've noticed that nobody really mentions any standout moments or lines in them aside from Thanos memes. that's a big sign of mediocrity. it's telling that the only Marvel movie people have regularly referred to a month after it left theaters was Black Panther, and only because it's Hotep Potter

yeah i think the movie is about misogyny in a way, but it isn't misogynistic. it seemed to be about the artistic process, and the muse archetype/stereotype

I saw "Ready or Not" with my girlfriend last weekend and it does a pretty good job portraying the very rich as both hopelessly out of touch and literally in league with satan. expected it to be bad and ended up enjoying it a good amount, particularly the deadpan humor and the way the rich family treated the help as disposable

not great or super memorable but it's uncommon to go see a horror movie at the discount theater and come away having liked it

Pener Kropoopkin

The feminist take on The VVitch really bothers me, because the witches are all unambiguously evil. It's not a liberating story, she's literally making a compact with the Devil as his bride.

imo the real takeaway is that whatever beliefs you hold dear are no substitute for community, and the father taking his family into the wilderness based solely on his own interpretation of scripture just exposed them to the worst form of evil.

That's something else that these, besides that these 23+ movies have maybe 5 lines that get quoted between all of them, they're are no stand out set pieces like running from the boulder, ripping the heart out, choosing the wrong grail, the Death Star trench run, the Canal chase from T2, anything from Aliens or any of the other rich stones of well cinema that have been absorbed into culture. It's like the opposite of Avatar that made a billion dollars but left no pop cultural foot print, these Marvel movies make so much money and god knows their toys and other related things are everywhere but nothing from there movies themselves have entered into our cultural history like these other scenes have. Maybe the elevator fight from Winter Solider?

Avatar has a hugely successful theme park and apparently some mountains in like China or something. You don’t need a moment.

Hell Harry Potter doesn’t have anything like that and it’s still going strong despite how hard Rowling is trying to kill it

i like the marvel movies well enough and i think there's plenty of memorable stuff from them, but there's just too loving much. there's an assload of movies and they're putting them out too fast, so by the time you've seen one, there's another one coming up. they put the loving trailer for at least 2 more movies in the credits of the one you're seeing in the theater. and now i'd say its pretty well saturated beyond the ability to hold your interest. i watched the new spider-man movie a few days ago and all i remember is that gyllenhall is hot

its a problem with lots of pop culture right now, there is just too much to deal with and it feels like you're always falling behind. if you don't spend 4 hours a night watching poo poo you can't talk to people about poo poo anymore. people want me to watch el camino but i barely remember breaking bad at this point so i think i'd just be lost

so my project has been watching a 30 year old japanese cartoon lol
