Which, even though it'd basically be a strongly-worded letter and the least amount of anything we could do in this situation, is still better than doing nothing, standing by, letting a dictator steamroll one of our only allies in the region, and then being like "oh but we're gonna sanction you". Meanwhile Turkey goes "yeah sure whatever" :jerkbag: and helps resurrect ISIL just so they can do their "demographic corrections" which is the most Orwellian-rear end phrase I've heard since "alternative facts"

This whole incident has left me very sad and very pissed off. With our presence we were helping the Kurds survive and form their own nation, a group who both fights the hell out of Fascists and ISIL, a group who genuinely liked us, and the GOP once again has betrayed them, for money (basically). This has probably cost the United States our relationship with the Kurds for good, and I don't blame the Kurds at all for that. They need to survive in the face of an overwhelming genocidal force. If that means signing deals with Russia (who will probably betray them at some point) and Iran, then so be it.

Additionally we now have US troops in a warzone unable to do anything because they don't even know what their orders are to the point where an alleged ally is shelling them. In addition to all the Kurdish lives being lost and at risk, we're also going to lose lives of US forces for no other reason than Trump's lack of spine and personal greed.

gently caress The Hague, we should just black-bag Trump and Graham, fly them into Kurdistan, and let the Kurds judge them for what they've done. Yes, I know, that will never happen. I really need a break from all this terrible news but at the same time I feel like I have to know how bad this is getting and will get.

The main difference i see between my families success and all my american social circle. Is all my american friends minds are set in a do hours for $ and settle for a very low amount. Low ambition. Living their best life yaaaas. Lots of partying, traveling experiences. New cell phones and cars.

When they do contemplate starting a business its always fun stuff like business is supposed to be fun enjoyable. Their follow through is weak. And shortly theyve given up and back to trading time for low $

No, social mobility has dropped significantly even in the last few years and blaming it on 'lazy millenials' is yet another victim blaming troupe. In fact exactly the opposite of your bootstraps == increased income is true. Workers born in the 1940's (i.e. boomers) were way more likely to be members of unions, work hourly at the same company for long stretches of time, not have massive college debt, and retire with a modest pension. Yet 90% made more money than their parents* with those 'trading time for low $' jobs. The problem is not on the labor side, but the capital side. Capital has been able to gut worker protections, collective bargaining, and pensions all of which contribute to the lack of social mobility.

Your rags to riches immigrant stdh.txt is interesting but exactly the opposite of reality. Well-paid workers with social stability do better overall than those without.

Eh, for me part of it is how tasteless it is (shootings in religous buildings having gone up since Trump took office), combined with it feeling like a really dumb, teen edge-lord type of thing to do, but not treated as seriously as if a teenager had done it. Like, if someone in high school made a video like this, with them shooting classmates they didn't like, people would be alarmed, and that kid would probably get expelled.

Here everyone either laughs or gets pissed off, but nothing will ultimately be done.

By and large, Americans are bored by process arguments, and the fact that Republicans are stuck with them this time around is extremely good. To most people the details of how stuff happens don't matter and being on the side that has to explain how things are supposed to happen is unenviable. Historically it's been the Dems in that spot.

Incidentally, this is also why there would be next to no blowback from doing important process things like abolishing the filibuster, just as there was none from previous filibuster rollbacks. Only the most insufferable politics nerds like us give a poo poo.

yea they're relying on americans not knowing how congress works, and while that's not something unwise to gamble on normally most americans tune out 'NYEEEEH THEY'RE NOT FOLLOWING WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS NORMAL PROCESS' arguments that can be countered by the people being accused just going 'we're following the rules as written, shut up', most voters tend to hear that and go 'yea, they're following the rules'. It's the same reason the 'you have to vote to let the republicans subpoena people too!!!!' argument is failing to gain traction, the rebuttal is literally just 'no, we actually don't'.

I'd say that's definitely the case though.

"Free speech" as written into the constitution was very much about the whole liberal "marketplace of ideas" that the left loves to mock.

Is slavery a good thing or not? I dunno, let's hear from both sides of the issue and let the white males decide. That sounds like an exaggeration, but it's not.

Pretend I've summarized a huge chunk of On Liberty if you want a basic rundown of the logic involved in every idea, no matter how vile, being given a fair hearing.

(Btw - written just before the Civil War. Slavery was not the paramount concern for a British philosopher at the time, but the most prominent example of public debate he could think of, with evolution theory being introduced at the same time)

Retroactively, a fairly commonly cited example of "vile ideology actually gains in power when given room for debate" is Nazism, obviously (hence the Paradox of tolerance, before it was mostly stolen by the right to use against the mooslim hordes).

I can't really accurately chart how these principles were abandoned: probably some combination of actually leftist ideas being popularized in the US again and disdain for right-wing propaganda / radicalization.

But right now, there's a definite popular sentiment of "Nazis don't deserve a platform to spread their lies, every public or private organization should ban radical right-wing speech". Which... fair enough on its own. But the left always though of the right (and the center-right liberals) as basically fascist and fascist book-lickers anyway, and hasn't been shy about stating as much.

The combination of the two - nazis don't get to speak and everyone to the left of me is a nazi - is worrying.

I get that that's a right-wing talking point, but gently caress it - they have a lot of talking points, they're bound to get somewhere close to the truth in their claims of persecution at least once in a while.

There's a simple subtext, speech calling for the murder, enslavement, financial destruction and marginalization of readily identifiable human beings is at best, evil. The paradox of intolerance unfortunately plays into the neo liberal trap of all speech having a baseline value, whereas hate speech without social normalization would get you thrown out of communities.

It's the same warping of the baseline as 2nd amendment advocates insisting they need all guns with no restrictions.
