A company wants to bring me in for an in-person interview for a SOC tier 1.5 role. On one hand, it would be mostly emails and alerts rather than phones, on the other hand it would be overnights. On one hand, I would get hands-on Linux experience. On the other hand, contract to hire with no paid holidays, coming into the holiday season. I feel indecisive about this one.

You may have a point there, everyone probably wants time off to travel this time of year. OTOH contract means they aren't going to want OT because they don't want to pay the staffing agency $100/hr.

Looks like I might have to add a third rack to my server closet... do they sell a ladder to climb over a row of racks so you can get around to the back of them? There's another 5 feet of ceiling height and I only have to get behind the servers maybe once a year, but adding a third rack will block access to the power cables in back.

Sounds like an accident waiting to happen, as well as making it impossible for people to help you if you go behind the racks and have a stroke or whatever. If you need a third rack of kit because the business needs have grown then they need to cough up for a remodel to make the room bigger as well. Either that or cut another door in so you can walk around to get to the back.

I guess if we unbolted the other two racks from the ground we could slide them over and pack them together well enough to fit a third and still have walk-around room, that's probably the only option besides my ladder idea. Or just do a half-height rack so I can just hop up onto it. I did IT in the military, I suppose my tolerance for death-trap server and radio rooms is higher than most people. I remember one room where if you slipped walking to it, you were simply microwaved to death.

Network went down today that probably cost a few hundred thousand. Some idiot shorted out the system. Anyway every time in a crisis I get tunnel vision and have to fight to keep my head. In these cases I can deal with the immediate problem facing me but nothing else. Which is not good, I'm not sure if I get more crisis experience I'll get over this. It's only when I'm working alone. My plan now is to make a Don't Panic doc for myself that I can bring up when something like this happens. It's rare enough that when it happens I'm caught off guard hence panic so I think my idea is a good one. At least have the basic steps written down and ready so I don't even have to think or worry.

Just like dealing with any sort of emergency situation, you will get better with time. Although I did notice you said something along the lines of "especially when I'm the only one." Some quick thoughts. Make sure you have someone, even if it's a non-technical person intercepting users during that time. It's incredibly difficult and frustrating to try to fix a downtime-enducing issue while users are banging down your door. The other thought is, if you're the only one then 1) you're their best chance of solving this problem quickly and 2) its clearly not that critical of they only have one person who can handle this sort of thing. Make sure you put in the work so you are confident in your network and things are running well. Makes it easier to troubleshoot when it's not a house of cards. And don't run anything in production without a support contract. Support generally sucks but it's better than nothing and at the very least you can say you arr working with a vendor. Especially if you're on a small team who can't possibly know everything.

Work on your mental health, which a lot of tech workers ignore or brush under the rug. See a counselor, deal with any anxiety, depression, stress, get some meds if needed. It will do wonders for your ability to deal with stress or high pressure situations at work. And make you happier overall. Everyone should see a counselor.

Last year it was $25 and that's it to see a mental health specialist. The insurance at my company changed and now it's $25 plus a $2500 deductible. I can't afford to go anymore.

This would be a good idea. There is a reason pilots have these kind of checklists, its to help them stay calm and still accomplish what needs to be done. Also like the other posts mental wellness helps with handling stress and everyone reacts to critical situations differently. I think one of the thread titles is or was a snippet from a story where the boss was upset that the person didn't seem panicked enough, so don't worry so much about appearances.

I would have never survived past 30 without the services of both a psychiatrist *and* a psychologist. Of course on the flip side, please take care of your physical health as well. I'm six weeks out of open-heart surgery, and the whole process is super not-fun. Fortunately, everything post-surgery has been optimal in terms of results and recovery, but it would have been better to have never needed it at all.

My new CIO is a complete moron. The man is such a mental midget that I don't know how our CEO and board endured him during the interview process. After the last week of being in meetings with him every day, I don't know what he would actually be competent at doing. I wouldn't trust this man to make a sandwich. The man claims 30 years of IT leadership experience. It seems in his last 30 years he has neither trusted his engineers or learned anything in the process. He can't use technology more complicated than a coloring book and everything technology seems terrifying to him during meetings. We are a global company. Much of our Citrix environment goes through a central Colo which provides us external IP's for internet usage and such. Because a previous network engineer was a cheeky gently caress, all our IP's are homed in the UK instead of its physical location in the US. This causes browsers and such show your location as the UK even if you are in the US. This is an easy problem to fix despite the fact that every loving public ip has been homed in the UK. We simply rehome them to the US through our ISPs. Easy but takes up to two weeks. He doesn't care and has made this priority number 1 out of all issues/projects. SAP migration? Nah. Make google maps show my location on my laptop above all else. Captain cry baby threw a huge tantrum when he was told what the issue was and what the fix was. So much so he demanded the issue be fixed that very day. After it wasn't fixed that day (obviously because it can't) he has threatened people with firings and layoffs. E-v-e-r-y d-a-y. Every day I go to a leadership meeting and every day any issue or project the company is facing he demands satisfaction before end of business from his direct reports across the entire division. This is cartoon level crazy. Being that he has thrown a tantrum every day and then not actually done anything, I am beginning to think that this is just his personality. I got one offer in yesterday and one offer is suppose to be coming in by end of day. I am taking one of these golden tickets out of here. I probably won't even put in notice.

That's what's great about a contract. No strings attached for both parties. If your having doubts look at it this way: they cared about you'd they hire you directly. If you got another opportunity, take it.
