There's also this horrible story in the news about a couple with a baby being put through the US's detention procedure: BBC News - Jailed British holidaymakers 'to be released soon' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-50061122 And I think that maybe our terrible governments are going to make a deal to release our citizens in exchange for letting off the American killer, then it'll be back slaps all round. Says it all though really, kill someone as you're driving on the wrong side of the road: a terrible accident, couldn't be avoided, no penalty. Drive over an unmarked border: automatic guilt and jail.

Yeah I saw that one yesterday and sad hahas only tbh, a sane country would just have the cop go "Hey you folks have strayed over the border a little. Don't worry! I'll just show you back over the line and we'll say no more about it." But customs and borders are never reasonable agencies and they never attract the sensible employees. Even in the best of times.

When I was in Luxembourg about 4 years ago, I took a train and went a stop too far into France to a station I thought was still in Luxembourg on a 'one day travelcard' or whatever it was. (I wondered why the train suddenly filled up with customs officials!). Instead of being thrown into prison USA style or accused of fraud UK style, they just said get off at the next stop and then go back.

Eg notice how 'police kill unarmed suspect who just happened to be the same colour as a criminal they were after' is swiftly followed by newspaper reports that 'yeah but he smoked dope once /stole some sweets off the sweetie counter in Woolworths when he was 6 so actually it's absolutely fine that he was killed.'

It's a constituency that has historically been Tory (save for a couple of Labour wins at the height of Tony Blair) and it's also the one that Luciana Berger's gone up for. I believe the area's got a strong Jewish population as well so it makes sense that they'd abandon Labour for Berger given the state of the news stories. I don't think you can translate that to a wider swing.

That'll be the anti-semitism effect. I've a very good long-time Jewish friend in that neck of the woods: left , pro-Palestinian human rights at some no small personal cost (being called 'kappo' 'self-hating' 'not-real-Jew' etc etc by his family) who has been generally pro-Corbyn, though not a party member. He's also an avid Guardian reader which has been the rag doing most of the pushing of the AS stuff. I went to stay with him and his wife earlier this year and he said he didn't really believe it, but he didn't know what to believe so to be safe he said from now on he'll be voting LibDem. Also what Rarity said. It's not really been a labour seat for much of its history. (It was at least two separate constituencies in Thatcher era). They may have committed the offence but it's hard not to look at it as a situation where a person buys a house in some land with no fences and camps out with night vision goggles and a loaded gun because castle doctrine is a thing. The swiftly applied, disproportionate force enforcement is carried out with because someone who's job it is wants to flex that now they get to Do Something is a dick move however you look at it.
