What does means testing mean to you?

Social programs that test your means before you can get them. "X% around poverty line to be elligible" vs " You a citizen?". Warren said something about giving social security people around 200 extra bucks as opposed to yangs UBI proposal and while admirable. I believe there are issues with setting a limit on who gets assistance, because in my experience that line is always gonna be set too low by the time any such proposal gets out of congress.

Not to mention that means testing adds significant administrative costs to programs, and stigmatizes them as something for poor people. It would be much simpler, for example, to just give everyone food stamps.

Really stoked for the phrase Forever War to enter the mainstream vernacular

Also on the wall street speculation tax: its important to note that stock prices are influenced by how a company performs and not really the other way around. Part of a stocks value is in what the company is actually worth, and then its inflated by speculation somewhat. Warren Buffet's berkshire hathaway has two classes of stock, one of which has never done a stock split. Stock A is 313k and stock B is just 208. The day trading types don't really do anything for the economy other than artificially inflate the value of a stock and benefiting off that bloated price. Factories don't magically become more productive just because the stock price rose 2%.

The ProPublica staff probably did their research, but isn't keeping two sets of books something companies normally do above board? Like tax laws and GAAP may have different depreciation schedules, etc, to where it makes sense to run your accounting one way to determine tax liability and another way to report to the SEC.

They are based out of Boca, so they'd be better off stealing / renting a boat and heading to Bahamas or even Cuba. Or a charter flight. Anything but rolling up to huge airports.

Yes, but book-tax differences are limited in scope. Things like depreciation can deflate your tax liability and later inflate it, income from Muni bonds and never taxed, etc.

Altering occupancy rates is not an acceptable tax-book difference. People paying you monthly rent do not dissapear because you are filing your 1140. There is no place on the M1 schedule for calculating your liabilities as profit.

Yes, a lot of companies have different books for tax and financial because the methods of doing certain things are different. Depreciation, for example, is almost always completely different. Tax code has its own depreciation method, but for financial purposes you can depreciate stuff any which way you want as long as it makes sense.

It's the sound your brain makes when introduced to Donnie Goodbrain's latest Twitter-making GBS threads. Something goes "crack" and then pings off the wall.

(It's actually a meme from somewhere that got brought over to a different subforum here or something but, eh, just roll with it.)

also just a reminder Cyprus is in the EU but 40% of the island is still illegally occupied by the turks. Comedy option would be to drop some cruise missiles on their bases on the island then watch them complain about getting smoked while illegally occupying territory of an EU member.
