It's similar to when she said "nobody really needs access to sulphuric acid" after the acid attack panic, which as someone who's been in a position relying on a truck with a lovely battery and also no money for non-lovely batteries I kinda disagree with. It's fine to call the Tories out on breaking their lovely manifesto pledges and promising the impossible, but don't overegg it by promising the impossible/undesirable yourself.

She could have said the policy was clearly completely unworkable from the start and that it demonstrates the tories' approach to things being utterly unsuited to the realities of the world we live in. Rather than "this would have been great and I wish I'd have done it"

In the context of objecting to the shelving of a bad law, I think it bears clarification that you do not support the bad law. Because if you adopt the tory language and complain about the tories not doing a bad law, it just makes you look as if you like the tory law... Especially when you're occupying a notoriously lovely position in a party that up until quite recently would have also supported the lovely law. She's saying that if they had gone ahead then 'very young children' would no longer have access to 'hardcore porn'. She's painting the scrapped law as a good thing. She's also saying that not wanting to heavily regulate the internet means you aren't interested in 'law and order'. Being able to watch porn online isn't a matter of loving law and order, that's some authoritarian bullshit. She also has form on this, she's said before nobody should have the right to be anonymous online which is even more draconian than any measures proposed by the Tories. I'm genuinely beginning to think she might not be a very good home secretary.

One can hope, of course, that she just doesn't understand the nature of the internet and therefore would not, for example, suggest children should need to post on LGBTQ forums under their public name and address, or people should have to register with the police to be able to discuss organizing a protest, or that people's employers should be able to google them and pull up their conversations with people about the benefits of unionization. One can hope, but "I haven't thought about any of that before deciding people shouldn't be allowed anonymity" is not the mark of someone I want in the office in charge of whether we have anonymity.

Wikipedia says that "he undermined his previous liberal credentials to some extent by pushing through the controversial Prevention of Terrorism Act, which, among other things, extended the length of time suspects could be held in custody and instituted exclusion orders" - so he was bad too. (And then he founded the SDP.)

It's weird how society managed to produce this endless stream of boring old farts who end up with this bizzare idea that all human activity needs to be controlled. You'd have thought it'd have taken a dent after the sixties, though maybe that's because it was counterculture at the time. I feel like today it's more culture, maybe there's hope for the future.
