Reagan definitely had dementia by the time he ended his second term, but was still a bit more lucid in the first if I recall theres an untold thing in the story so far where during the Hinckley assassination attempt, the Reagans were not following Joan Quigley (the Astrologer) for setting that day's schedule, and when Nancy went back to her afterwards, the Quigley told Nancy if she followed her schedule than it wouldn't have happened so for the next 5 or 6 years Quigley basically Rasputined her way into influencing government, and set most of the operational schedule for the White House and gave policy advice like they would always set weirdass times for briefings and the press thought it was Reagan antagonizing them but it was because of what Quigley divined It's really loving insane how much power they gave to a San Francisco socialite

1/7/1986 President Reagan begins his 33rd press conference by calling the Vienna airport "Vietnam International", calls 11 year old terrorist victim Natasha Simpson "Marsha Simpson", and says Qaddafi is "not only a barbarian but he's flaky" 1/15/1986 President Reagan is asked if he intends to see Halley's Comet. "If it's a choice between sleeping or seeing it," he replies, "I'll wait and see it on television." 4/9/1986 President Reagan says he rarely quotes William F. Buckley, Jr., "Because he uses too big of words." 10/22/1986 "I was in such a hurry, I wrote my last name first," President Reagan after signing his tax reform bill 'Reagan Ronald'. 11/26/1985 President Reagan tells reporters that his 688 acre ranch - to which the rambunctious Lucky is being exiled - is "dog heaven". When reporters attempt to shift the topic to an upcoming tax bill, the President says, "I'm concentrating on dog heaven." 12/9/1986 Reporters ask President Reagan if he's watching the White House Foreign Affairs Committee hearings. "Oh, now and then when I can't find a ball game," he quips, leaving them to wonder what kind of ball game he expects to find early on a weekday morning in mid-December. 2/12/1987 President Reagan tells a group of junior high students about how Rex barks in front of Lincoln's bedroom and won't go in, which makes the President think Lincoln's ghost is in there. "Well," he says, "I guess that's enough of a history lesson here for today." Groovelord Neato fucked around with this message at 15:35 on Oct 16, 2019 |

Maureen became cochair of the RNC and often did stump speeches for segregationalist gubernatorial candidates. On the flip side, the kids from Nancy, Ron Jr. and Patti want nothing to do with him. Ron became a progressive talk show host who's supported Bernie, and Patti remained mostly apolitical, but changed her last name to avoid having the Reagan name tied to her.

The hard right turn is a mystery to me too. Maybe it's because I consider myself pretty far left but I've never understood people who either go from left to right or apolitical to hard right. When I was in the military my best friend Dan was totally apolitical. He knew that W was president, but probably couldn't tell you much else. Then in 2008 he started getting interested in politics, got sucked into the tea party and became a hard core Libertarian. If anything, while in the military I went from center left to hard left because one of my close friends was a big lefty and I didn't really have anyone else to talk politics too because everyone else was what we would now call a chud or apolitical. But in my own experience I have seen how powerful talk radio can be because I listened to Air America Radio (Al Frankens liberal talk radio channel) and if anything it pushed me farther left than I already was.

I'd heard the drowning thing happened on similar logic to the stories of the old Christian Samaritan cultists who intentionally tried to get martyred to guarantee their way to heaven. Drowning didn't seem like a big deal, because if they were drowned proving their innocence and purity it was a golden ticket to heaven. But it could definitely be a thing of legends getting written down as fact.
