The thing that blows my mind (and to an extent it's been the same as the Ragnar Redbeard Behind the Bastards episodes). I've stayed more or less ideologicaly the same my whole life. But when people make these hard turns like Ronnie did it seems so weird to me.

I am actually surprised by how loving evil Nancy was. I was unaware of how hollow the space where her soul was supposed to be is. Maureen became cochair of the RNC and often did stump speeches for segregationalist gubernatorial candidates. On the flip side, the kids from Nancy, Ron Jr. and Patti want nothing to do with him. Ron became a progressive talk show host who's supported Bernie, and Patti remained mostly apolitical, but changed her last name to avoid having the Reagan name tied to her.

The hard right turn is a mystery to me too. Maybe it's because I consider myself pretty far left but I've never understood people who either go from left to right or apolitical to hard right. When I was in the military my best friend Dan was totally apolitical. He knew that W was president, but probably couldn't tell you much else. Then in 2008 he started getting interested in politics, got sucked into the tea party and became a hard core Libertarian. If anything, while in the military I went from center left to hard left because one of my close friends was a big lefty and I didn't really have anyone else to talk politics too because everyone else was what we would now call a chud or apolitical. But in my own experience I have seen how powerful talk radio can be because I listened to Air America Radio (Al Frankens liberal talk radio channel) and if anything it pushed me farther left than I already was.

I'd heard the drowning thing happened on similar logic to the stories of the old Christian Samaritan cultists who intentionally tried to get martyred to guarantee their way to heaven. Drowning didn't seem like a big deal, because if they were drowned proving their innocence and purity it was a golden ticket to heaven. But it could definitely be a thing of legends getting written down as fact.

I already knew most of these Reagan stories, and certainly all the major ones, but hearing them all in a row really drives home that none of this is new. If anything has changed, it's that the American public now largely reacts with horror when we see a white nationalist celebrity with dementia occupy the White House. It would almost be cause for optimism if I didn't know that the GOP is planning on doing a Anyway, can anybody find the source for that bizarre story about Larry Speakes turning off the press room's lights?
