Sorry if this got poster earlier and I missed it. A while back those Missing 411 stories were posted here and really caught my attention. I just found someone made a documentary on a few of those stories and its available on Youtube for free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEA9-mEOZtA

You can go deep down the Missing411 rabbit hole on YouTube. I followed it past disappearances, right over Sasquatch territory, through alien abduction, to wendigos and skinwalkers, until I hit literal demons (who might also be aliens).

Essentially, be careful to always keep an eye on the line between the factual disappearances and folklore. The folklore is fun as gently caress, though.

Something in my brain has been broken for a while now, but I can’t help but feel weird that one reaction I had to this news story was “Huh. Her tattoo looks like Dr. Rockso’s high school senior photo.”

Police in Colorado are asking for the public’s help in identifying a victim and suspect after a body was found in a suitcase in a dumpster.

If folks want an interesting and entertaining look at the Missing 411, the What If? Podcast covers it in episodes 24, 46, 47, 68, 69, 104, and 141.

An honorable mention for episode 80 where they go to the Mile High Mystery Conference and David Paulides and his cop stache threatens to kick them out for trying to record from the back of the room.

They go from "this is really weird and freaky" to "David Paulides might be cherry picking and presenting urban legends" to "David Paulides is full of poo poo and actively makes poo poo up while refusing to say its all because of interdimensional Bigfoot when he clearly thinks its all because of interdimensional Bigfoot"

Each episode is self contained and you can listen in any order, but going on order gives a really nice metanarrative that they clearly didn't plan.

I feel like the rational answer to the cause for the disappearances and deaths are likely a combination of the environment (including wildlife) and human foul play. But there always seem to be nutters who go completely off the deep end and end up at demonic aliens.

Something that stuck with me is many reports state remains were found far from where they went missing or well into inhospitable landscapes and the investigators are always scratching their heads saying "this was hard for me there's no way a child could have done it." But drat, kids are really loving zesty and they can easily get themselves to areas that would make a 50 year old policeman's knees cry out for the sweet relief of death. There has to be foul play involved in some of them but I feel like getting lost and succumbing to the elements is likely the cause of death for most of the cases.

I think the vast majority of these cases are completely natural, because, after all, forests have a lot of places to hide a body, especially when the victim is scared, panicked, and trying to find shelter to hide in prior to dying. Some of the more extreme examples seem suspicious to me that maybe there is something unaccounted for causing them, but then again my idea of wilderness is the woods I used to find porno mags in when I was a kid, so there are most likely completely rational explanations that I don't know enough about hiking, camping, and general outdoorsy stuff to consider.

Ah, who am I kidding, it's skinwalkers.

Yeah, I think there's a few cases that are legitimately headscratching (the Yuba City 5 comes to mind) but most are a series of bad decisions, none of which are in and of themselves fatal, but when done in sequence put someone in a life threatening situation they couldn't get out of (Death Valley Germans come to mind).

I think folks also generally underestimate what folks are capable of doing when in a life threatening situation vs. what they can normally do when things are running fine.

I've got problems in my back and one of my legs, I walk with a limp most of the time, and standing up for more than 15-20 minutes is not fun. I can walk normally for about 5 minutes without pain. Last summer, through a series of decisions that seemed perfectly reasonable at the time, I ended up alone several miles from my car with no phone or water on a 100 degree day.

Now, I wasn't in real danger. I ran across enough folks that if I wasn't afraid of dying or even passing out really, but it was still an insanely stupid position I put myself in, and there wasn't any one decision that, in the moment, was really stupid. Just a big chain of small, bad decisions. Also, I was able to push way, way beyond what I would have thought my back and leg could handle on nothing more than fear and adrenaline.

I figure a lot of the Missing 411 folks do similar things, even if they're kids or the elderly. The human body has an insane ability to keep going when mortal danger is around.

Yeah, not to be the one saying Santa Claus isn't real, but Missing 411 is best treated as a creepypasta. Which is fair, since if I remember right some of those forest ranger creepypastas got wrapped in at some point.

The thing that struck me, after someone pointed it out, is that people don't grasp just how quickly you can end up in straight up wilderness.

This is the story of a hiker who went missing and died on the Appalachian Trail that always struck me. She was only 2 miles off of the trail and they think the search dogs came within 100 yards of her camp multiple times.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/may/26/hiker-who-went-missing-on-appalachian-trail-survived-26-days-before-dying

Until they found her body, the story was just a woman disappearing in the woods without a trace.

If you don’t know who Kurds are, how the US just hosed them over, or what white phosphorus does (hint: it can burn through your bones while you’re still alive and water/sweat/blood makes it even hotter), take a few minutes to check those out, then come back to read how Turkey is suspected of using white phosphorus against Kurdish civilians in Syria [TW for image of a young boy with badly damaged skin], in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Nobody in this thread is taking 411 seriously. But yeah it's ludicrously easy to get turned around in places you aren't familiar with or without an obvious landmark to orient yourself toward. There's no difference between being lost 3m or 3km from rescue if you start walking in the wrong direction.

Ufologists are the conspiracy equivalent of hoarders. Unexplained lights? UFO. Unexplained disappearance? UFO. Lost time? UFO. Mysterious figures skulking around? Covering up a UFO. Jesus? Alien. Angels? Aliens. Bigfoot? Shows up in areas with UFO activity. Hearing voices? Alien communication. Media critical of Donald Trump? Trying to discredit him before he discloses UFOs (any day now...)

Everything is aliens.

Yeah, it's pretty rare for a cockatiel to mimic speech but they can whistle a tune great. The pair of ones I had growing up would take bars from the various tunes they knew to warble out their own compositions.

They're pretty easy to take care of too. Mostly just preventing them from chewing things up for fun (they'll tear apart your keyboard or shred your important documents if you let them) and constantly refilling their water dish because they keep making GBS threads in it.
