The basis of Trump's wealth is the tower in Manhattan. Some of his individual failed businesses had their sources of funding, but generally he was borrowing against that tower. The value of Manhattan real estate just went up faster than he could lose money on airlines or casinos or whatever. That's part of why the tax return question is so interesting, it would shed some light onto just how leveraged he is. Trump Tower is worth several billion and he owns it, but no one has any idea how much debt he has.
