FF9 is the worst game on Switch by far for this. It’s very frustrating that Square-Enid refused to fix the problems, and Nintendo won’t refund the game.

Square-Enix is poo poo at fixing their ports. The only one they bothered to fix was the Steam port of Chrono Trigger, and that’s because it got review bombed to hell and back.

Sunless Sea just got announced for the Switch, as did Sunless Skies. The first one was fun, though early access feedback led to some overturning. Haven’t really spent time with Skies yet though.

It should be noted that the writer of Sunless Seas (though not Skies AFAIK?) is a horrifying sex pest and you should not be supporting anything they've done.

What part of the game are you guys at that FF9 was constantly crashing? I got through the game up to where disc 3 would be on the original game, and I don't think I've had the game crash once on me.

Fair enough for your daughter, but the original question was concerning an eight-year-old, not six. There's a biiiiiiiig developmental difference between the two. An eight-year-old could handle BotW no problem. Another thing to consider, both for your kid or anybody else thinking about BotW is kids don't care of they don't make progress in a game. Tell your kid that they don't have to fight anything (because they don't). Show them ways to avoid combat.

This is the goddamned truth. I played Zelda 2 before I learned to read, never being able to get further than the first palace, and the first two towns. I didn't know that I even had a jump spell that I could use, nor did I understand that the candle lit up dark caves.

I loved it all the same. It's still my favourite Zelda game (haven't played BotW yet).

I don’t play video games. We don’t have any video games in the house. My daughter has somehow decided (YouTube?) that she wants a Nintendo switch for Christmas. First of all I don’t know what controllers or accessories I need to buy with it, nor do I know what games an eight-year-old girl might enjoy. I am lost and stupid. Please help me. We will probably start her off with about three games

Since no-one mentioned it before, I suggest Mario Maker 2. As you can make your own Mario-levels and play the levels made by other people all over the globe, it's literally the Mario game which never ends, my friend.

First off, I wanna say good job for coming in here and asking the hobbyists whats up instead of doing what the average parent does and just buying some movie tie-in games or taking a random guess on some cheap shovel-ware. Like with anything else a kid spends their personal play-time with, video games can be a formative experience, so it's cool to use some discretion as the adult and get some quality crafted titles for your kid!

Oh yeah, but that's not always bad. In my case, asking my parents for "a computer", got me an Amstrad CPC 464, a thing I literally had never heard off before it was suddenly dropped into my lap. It taught me many things, like for example how to overwrite all my mom's music with computer programs. :v:

Still, the visible confusion on my face when I got presented with "a computer", exactly as I had wished, must have been a delight for my parents

You can still go down the same route by getting some sort of Chinese knock-off Switch called "The Real Swotch (TM)" or something like that. Just think of the look on your daughter's face. :haw:

Yeah, I think I'm up to disc 2 by now (stopped playing the instant Grandia came out for Switch, so it's been there like this for a couple months now) and had zero problems with crashes. Is this a thing where you have to go to like the final dungeon to make the problems start?

Thank you SomethingAwful forum poster Silver Falcon for the amazing insights that kids are all different, 8 year olds are developmentally more advanced than 6 year olds, and that video games are for fun.

In the future, when making recommendations regarding your favorite game I will not give context as to why I made them and instead will suggest that they spend 60 bucks on a game that at best they won't fully engage with for years and at worst they will actively be frustrated with.

While I don't know it really isn't a type of game where it matters a whole lot, so you're bound to hear about it long before it gets to a point where it really impacts play.

I just beat it, and I didn't notice any issues. That said it's not a very demanding or action-packed game so they would really have had to gently caress it up.

I already knew some people boycotted the game because the devs didn't remove the voiceline from jontron, and I do agree that's lovely (even if it's just a little voice clip on a random npc) but did they say/do more or is that the extent of "the devs are gamergaters"? :ohdear:
