I used to live in a place 10 years ago where the city council decided it was a good idea to enact a law banning trick or treating for over-12s (except for people with developmental disabilities), and banned over-12s from wearing masks on any day other than Halloween. “It was scaring elderly residents.”

What's the Democrats plan for dealing with admin officials who have ignored their congressional subpoena? This article lays out what can be done but I haven't seen any indication that the Democrats are taking any action beyond the civil lawsuit route. The articles also includes a list of everyone that ignored one so far:quote:Rudy Giuliani, Trump's Personal Attorney - Deadline: October 15 (Missed) All of this is also adding to the broader sense that the rule of law has been seriously weakened under Trump. If congress can't take these people to task now for their clearly illegal contempt then there's no reason to think they're going to be able to constrain the admin from taking other increasingly illegal actions.

Nocturtle posted:Why even issue the subpoenas if they're not going to enforce them? to provide a very obvious answer: it's been like two weeks total and they can enforce them at any time, so it opens up the option to move immediately to that when they're ready. not issuing them would be to accept a delay later on for no reason. less obvious answer: the unprecedented cooperation by State and Defense career officials over the trump admin's objections means they have a lot of information coming in right now and their schedule is filled with useful activity at the moment. most likely, they assume that when they put the facts together and complete these witness depositions, they will be in a better position to enforce subpoenas in court and will have an even clearer public mandate for them. everyone wants action now but their knowledge and evidence is rapidly increasing at the moment, and acting now before they know the extent of that evidence might not be the best strategic decision. to be clear: i think they should enforce the subpoenas. but unlike some previous delays in other forums, there's actually a reasonable argument that there might be upsides to delay in this specific investigation at this specific moment. if we're still asking this question in january, i will probably no longer think it's reasonable eke out fucked around with this message at 16:46 on Oct 22, 2019 |

Congress has been giving away every power it possibly can to the executive for decades. It turns out doing things is unpopular, but talking about things is very popular.
