(4am close max vs 24hours at the casino). Against all official advice and public objection, the pro-business government agreed to this sweetheart deal with one of NZ’s most hated companies, so yeah, there are plenty of Aucklander’s who are more than happy to let this motherfucker burn.

Looks like bulk liquefaction, which apparently causes container ships to capsize. Basically they're hauling a "solid" load of powder, but there's water in the powder. The water flows to the bottom of the load, and when the moisture content of the bottom reaches a certain critical threshold the "powder" turns into mud and starts flowing around. Because there are no baffles in the truck, any bouncing or movement causes huge waves in the material, which push the truck side-to-side. His load basically rocked the truck clean off the chassis. Edit: http://bulkcarrierguide.com/cargo-liquefaction.html

The "permit to drill 50 metres" is part of the utility locates that would list any underground services buried in the area. When you fill out your "one call" request, it will ask you for the maximum depth, because if you are going less than (X depth) they may give you a clearance based on the fact that you say*** you're only going to (X depth). Sewer lines can sometimes be buried fairly deep for example, like 50+ feet, but if you specify that you're only drilling 20 feet deep they may clear you to go 20 feet without marking anything out. *** Boreholes go deeper than expected all the fuckin time.

Mr. Apollo posted:That makes sense. The purposely ask for a deep maximum depth to make sure they get the location of any buried utilities or infrastructure. It sounds like they had the position of the borehole wrong. I don't know for sure. The picture that I saw shows them off the road, but still on public property. Though, I don't know where the property line actually is, its not likely that close to the road. Drilling on city property usually requires some sort of permits and whatnot, especially, in this case, as they were obstructing the sidewalk. Best I can figure out is that they were here when it happened. When they say they were taking "core samples" that kind means different things to me vs others. To me "core samples" are rock cores, but thats probably me being kinda about it. Bedrock isn't particularly shallow there, but its not really deep either. The setup from what I can see looks like they have a water pit so they might have been using rock coring equipment if they did have to get a few rock samples, but those subway tunnels aren't buried *that* far below ground, probably only 20 or 30 feet tops. With bedrock being deeper than 60 feet in that particular area. So they may have been drilling for condos, but not likely if they're on city property. Probably some kind of infrastructure thing. Further up Yonge st. (north of the 401) there is a bunch of deeper drilling going on from some water and sewer work (or so I'm told), what these guys were doing could be related to that. The TTC will provide locates for their lines in any area that they have stuff present, and my guess is that the sheet said something really vague like "don't drill closer than 3 metres from the edge of (some surface feature that may have been removed 10 years ago or something)". Or they may have been given a certain area of clearance and they were right on the edge of, or outside that area. Sometimes its hard to position a machine like that right on the exact spot and be clear of overhead wires, underground pipes, and also give pedestrians a clear/safe path to walk, and also not obstruct entrances/exits to businesses. E: changed the location. Also E: After finding the actual location, I can say that I've literally drilled on the other side of the building from where this happened...... Recently. And at least part or all of that building is getting torn down fro Condos. So maybe you were right (condo anything in Toronto is a likely scenario). Maybe it was for the engineering company that hired us to do the drilling around the back. When I tried to drill around back, it was really fuckin hard and I couldn't get as deep as they wanted. So it makes sense that they were using a different method to get to whatever depth they're trying to get to. wesleywillis fucked around with this message at 22:03 on Oct 23, 2019 |

But it's a hell of a good guess when all he had to go on was a picture of a pile of broken concrete and some of the rod exposed.
