"Complicit" doesn't feel like a strong enough word for what they're doing; in a lot of cases they violate their own supposed terms by allowing that kind of trash to spread, because it drives ~engagement~ and more ad revenue.

Best way I heard this described is that social media is the weaponization of loneliness and stress. The social media companies weaponize it to drive that engagement, and the advertisers pay for it to happen so they can modify your behavior. Whether that modification is to make you buy more toothpaste or to disbelieve the idea of a shared, fact-based political discourse it's all the same to the amoral sociopaths making money off your loneliness and stress.

Oh, the network slogan is true -- "watch FOX and be damned for all eternity!"

"But for Trump, the potential damage is greater than that. Under New Jersey law, anyone who has one liquor license revoked must also give up all their other liquor licenses for two years. Trump has two other New Jersey golf clubs, including one in Bedminster that he uses as a summer White House."

Granted, Trump doesn't drink, so Bedminster losing its liquor license doesn't impact him directly. But it'd be a death blow for the property's revenue.

I look forward to seeing the "the president cannot have his golf club's liquor license revoked as long as he's president" argument in court.

This kind of thing more or less bears out that Donnie likes to run his White House in a permanent state of internal war. Constant backstabbing and spiking, and like this story, likely planted by someone else to try and further their backstabbing and spiking. Woo!

Oh cool, so I wasn't alone in feeling conflicted years later about not signing up/commissioning. Good to know.

I'll never forget some reserve major trying to talk me out of leaving ROTC by telling me about the time he got to live in England for six weeks because of some TDY and he tried to tell me I'd never do anything like that as a civilian in the most :smug: way possible. It backfired because he was such a prick about it. Then some colonel had to talk to me and he ended up being really chill about it and told me he was sad to me go but if I wanted an OCS slot to reach out to him or to possibly come back once I was in grad school.

Joke's on that major though, my wife's family has an apartment in Edinburgh that I live in for like a month every year or so.

That's awesome.

Yeah I think every now and then about "what might have been" but life turned out really good especially in the last 4-5 years so eh.

My one regret about not joining ROTC was turning down the airborne and air assault training they offered me as a civilian. Guy in my dorm went to airborne and air assault school, came back in the fall and quit the program.

Less that, and more that anger and sensationalism gets attention. Fox News rose up in getting everyone enraged about mundane normal stuff because poors/blacks/mexicans!!!. Social media just let the average person play the game instead of only the news outlets and media companies, and in making it mainstream.

There's no guarantees for schools in ROTC. You're competing against ever other moto rear end in a top hat to see who has the highest GPA and PT score. I decided to try hard to get into schools my junior year and my effort resulted in squat. At that point I realized that the military pits its officers against each other with the illusion that trying matters.

Things were different Back Then I guess. They told me "sign up this spring, we will send you over the summer and you can quit if you want next year. Just try it out!"

Sure enough, they came through for the guys (and girl) who signed up and, sure enough, one guy quit first day sophomore year.

poo poo, some reserve or NG SF unit used to qualify and take cadets free fall jumping. There was a guy in my dorm who went to Alaska between sophomore and junior year for some school or other.

The post-cold-war but budget cuts hadn't hit yet military was a weird place I guess.

If you enlist as a cadet in the ARNG and USAR in a unit that requires a school, then yeah, you'll go to that school. But then you have to go to drill and other poo poo.
