Be the change you want to see in the world, Rhyno. I’d also like to hear the old Fantastic Four radio show with a young Bill Murray as the Human Torch.

Hold on, are these really just going to be silver dollars with round pictures of Cyberfrog characters pasted on them? Not even uniquely minted coins? Who would want these?
|

Not even silver dollars, but based on the image 50 cent coins. There are silver proof sets available, but I feel the need to point out that President Kennedy is still depicted on the half-dollar.

Isn't there a pretty big market for right-wing souvenir coins and things like that? I remember reading a bit about the Trump memorabilia industry awhile ago and being surprised at how many dinky little pogs people were buying.

Galvanik posted:What, like to commemorate the completion of those stupid youtube Eat a Tide Pod type challenges? From what I recall: --various military organizations through history have had commemorative coins made for members, with various rituals like "if someone calls for a coin check whoever doesn't have theirs buys the next round". Your standard thing to help with unit cohesion. Senators and Presidents have done similar, though I'm not sure how much of that is "it was always done to some extent just not something people talked about" and how much is following the trend once it exploded. --Howard Taylor heard about it and realized it would fit well in his comic about a sci-fi mercenary company. And since webcomics folks are always looking for a way to afford rent, he also realized it would make a neat kickstarter for fans. --This went well, so a whole bunch of other webcomics folks (who also enjoy eating something other than ramen) jumped on even if it made less sense. This is when the idea of "challenge coins" lost its association with the military, but it's a decent idea; they're a nice size for something to collect that won't take up too much space, a chance for artists to do some fun design, and a known process so there didn't tend to be surprises through the manufacturing process. --From there things blew up into the public consciousness. Clickbait articles about challenge coins through history, arguments about appropriation, it pretty much replaced the term "commemorative coin" in many fandoms.

Yeah challenge coins were originally small little memorabilia to show you’ve worked with a certain unit or did a certain high ranking officer a favor and they gave you their coin as a literal token of their appreciation. Most people in the military don’t care at all about them these days. At most you’ll see somebody with a little rack of them on their office desk. Raging douchebags will try to play the drinking game with them. The drinking game is somebody demands everybody show their challenge coins, and whoever has the highest ranking officer’s or weirdest unit’s coin wins and gets a free drink on the losers tab. I never once encountered it while in but I also avoided other servicemembers when I was on my free time.
