Oko turning either into an Elk is not a time walk but one is a lot better than the other.

The UR Phoenix lists that people are refining are starting to look nice as well.

I really wish that there was a way to observe the MTGO pioneer tournament this weekend, I’m sure plenty of people will be streaming but being able to jump to different games and see what people are doing would be a lot of fun.

How many local stores have started up weekly pioneer events in everyone’s area? One store is doing a launch tournament this Saturday and the big store in my area is doing weekly events starting next week.

Edit - also on mtgo people are running main deck mystical dispute already to try and counter the 3 cmc walkers

Oko really does mess pretty badly with a longstanding weakness of UG; that it sucks really badly at dealing with “answer me or die” creatures. I would almost go so far as to call it a colour pie break.

At what point does your local store start doing something about slow play?

Tried a new shop out of curiosity. Didn't randomize seating so I got to listen to players on the far end of the pod openly discussing their picks and passes, good start.

Round 3 comes around. I lose game 1 in about 8 minutes. Game 2 starts and suddenly my opponent is tanking nearly every single turn. Missing triggers, going back over triggers. Never updating life totals properly. At about twenty minutes into this I call a judge/store employee and ask for them to watch for slow play.

During the remaining 20 minutes my opponent gets warned by the store employee 6 different times to speed things up. We go to turns and I just scoop. I should've upped and left after the second admonition without action but it's been a long day and I simply wanted to play some stupid wizard poker.

Dig and Cruise aren't enough?

Absolutely not. You can't just sit around and cast a Dig on turn 4 and then hope to try to win turn 5 or 6. I'm playing Commune with the Gods, which digs 5 deep for an Ascendancy or mana dork, plus puts 5 or 6 cards in the yard, plus a pile of cantrips so I can Cruise/Dig on turn 3 very easily even if I miss. These other versions cannot cast their delve spells easily, and they're not running much other cantrips or other forms of card velocity, so it mostly seems like their plan is to mull to the nuts or pray to topdeck well, and also hope the opponent doesn't disrupt them.

You can join the event, play all the rounds without dropping, and then after the finals finish you can watch all the replays of all the matches. If you ever close the window or the client when you do not have another round to play, you can never get the window back up, because of a change WotC made a few months ago. That makes it a huge pain in the rear end for the pauper people to collect metagame information from the challenge, since all it takes is one crash or misclick for that person to no longer be able to contribute to watching replays.

Also Spell Pierce has to be better than Mystical Dispute. How many blue creatures are particularly threatening? Even against random aggro decks, surely it's better to have a reasonable one-mana counter for only non-creatures than a mediocre three mana counter that can counter both. Though Narset and Teferi are both real drat stupid so I can see wanting to do your best against them.

I think the pongify would have been immensely more "in color" if it was a minus. That way they couldn't just blast your creature every turn. As it stands it's basically a kill spell as a plus, which I believe they've never done before since that seems pretty obviously broken!

sorcerous spyglass is banned because it blanks the text box of commanders, something you're only allowed to do if you're the pushed storyline mythic for a set (in which case you're allowed to do that with a ton of additional upside, also you're allowed to be have access to that effect on turn 3 100% of the time).

Oh It should be like, minus three. And the food thing should be a plus one. It dodging fry as it hits the board is dumb, fry was created specifically to deal with problematic planeswalkers, don't gimp it just bc you were horny for oko or whatever happened in development

i guarantee you the reason oko's food is a +2 is "lifegain is bad, everyone knows that, this is so low impact we better make it hard to remove"
then at a different point in development someone spilled coffee on a design doc and made his pongify a +1 instead of a -1.

What gets me is you only need to play against oko a handful of times to see how busted it is, it’s not like there’s some unanticipated interaction they overlooked. Card’s just ridiculous, and even if you don’t see it just by reading the card it should only take a few games of it hitting the board T3 to see why it’s too much.

So some group of people was definitely able to look at this and still were like “yeah seems fine”
