alright now that i'm back home i can go into a bit more about the gaga shows. i'll put the Enigma stuff in spoilers just in case anyone in here is gonna go see (mostly enigma, which is worth seeing with fresh eyes, not so much the jazz show which is just her singing the poo poo out of some jazz). Enigma is wacky as hell. I've never seen a Gaga show before and honestly the impression I got is that this is par for the course for her, but when she comes out in a Power Suit robot while dressed like a Kamen Rider villain to sing Government Hooker and Judas it was probably the height of everything. There's an overarching story that starts after she sings Just Dance/Poker Face/Lovegame where a weird alien looking thing called an Enigma (which is the representation of each person's "mystery") comes to take Gaga to the future. The teleportation stuff happens a few times and is an opportunity to get people to look at animations on a screen while Gaga is back changing costumes, and she looks like an anime magical girl/superhero in them. She then does a few songs from Fame (plus one of my personal favorite deep cuts, Dancing in the Dark) making fun of Insta-famous people (it's here where I realized that the thematic content of The Fame as an album is pretty thin for the most part), sings a few more songs, then she gets attacked by giant terrifying Paparazzi monsters with massive claw arms and cameras, and then we get to the Mad Max 2000 looking poo poo which is easily the highlight of the production design where she sings the aforementioned songs plus Schiesse and a verse of I'm Afraid of Americans. After this we get to "the healing place" where we get Edge of Glory, Alejandro, Million Reasons on a piano and then a rockin' version of You and I (which is already pretty rockin') then the end is Bad Romance and the topper of Born This Way (plus an encore of Shallow). I wish there was a bit more Artpop representation but i understand why there's not (no one but me likes that album), and maybe one more song from Joanne (which she actually jokes about everyone but her fans not liking even though it was so personal to her), but it's pretty hard to complain when she has so many good songs. Thematically, the show is a very interesting look into Gaga, Ten Years On. The story is about her discovering the mystery of her and of life, and while the plot is basically just an insane 90's sci-fi version of her coming-up story, it's very much concerned about why she is who she is, and feels like it was coming from an artist still trying to find her place in the larger music world. Obviously a lot of her songs are very timeless and have a wide variety of genre influences, but she made some snide remarks about "playlists" and the current vibe of pop music that made me think she's worried about where she fits in, but the ultimate moral of the story is how important her fans are to her. Which leads me into the most interesting thing about the performance: I know, because I am on Twitter, that Gaga recently went through a breakup. She went through a big breakup with her fiancé earlier this year after all of the Bradley Cooper rumors, and seems to have broken it off with her most recent boyfriend within the last few weeks, and she was very open emotionally on stage and looked like she was on the verge of crying quite a bit. Her "fame is prison" tweet combined with things she said at the concerts made me think that he broke it off because of how busy her life is and the lack of privacy one gets when one dates a Lady Gaga, and that was clearly weighing on her mind this weekend. She talked about the ups and downs of her life, how not every day is a good one, and the love songs that she sang (especially Someone To Watch Over Me at the jazz show) had a very bittersweet note to them. I feel like you don't always get a glimpse into the emotions of a huge massive pop star during their concerts but she really was very open to the audience and definitely soaked in the love from an entire room full of people who loved her and are touched by her. Which brings me to easily the best part of either show. During Enigma there was a moment where everything sort of stopped after a song and she sort of left the performance for a second to talk to the crowd, at which point someone at the front of the floor handed her a few things, one was a very nice looking doll-sized version of her Met gala dress (from someone who had apparently been to a Gaga show and given her one of these before), which she handed back to the fan and told them to keep safe until after the show when she'd meet with them and take pictures, and the other was a letter from a young woman in the crowd, which she read in full. It was about how she loved Gaga's music and seeing her was a lifelong dream and how much Gaga meant to her and how Gaga helped her be comfortable with herself, and it was clear that Gaga was touched by the letter and invited the young woman (who was Brazillian and definitely didn't speak much English) on stage for a hug and then sat her down on the piano bench and sang Million Reasons to her and to the crowd and i don't 'think there was a dry eye in the room at that point. Gaga obviously has a very special relationship with her fans that goes a little beyond the typical fan/artist relationship and that moment was the clearest example of that. She seemed to be in a place of hurt and the loving reaction from the fans was healing her. As for the Jazz show, it wasn't exactly the emotional journey that Enigma was but that's alright because the big showcase for that is her voice, which is amazing. I had to pick one show to get better seats for and one show to sit in the cheap seats, and it was a pretty easy choice, being in the front for Enigma was the right call because even at the back of the theatre her voice was perfect. The song selection was a nice variety of things she'd sang before, either with Tony Bennett or elsewhere (la vie en rose!), standards that fit in the Vegas theme, and rearrangements of some of her own songs, and her respect for jazz as an art is really evident. It also looked exactly like one of those classic Vegas showrooms on stage, and all of the instrumentalists (especially the trumpet guy, who is her bandleader and longtime friend) are A-plus and got plenty of time to shine. It was just a lot of fun, and Gaga was clearly having fun doing it. It really gave me a new respect for her craft, and makes me think that even if she's never relevant in pop music again (which i don't think will be the case), she will have a long, long career as a vocalist because she's just got such an amazing voice. It was remarkable to think that one night she was going through 2 hours of pop/rock at full voice without backing down and then the very next night did 2 hours of jazz vocals and still sounded amazing. She is truly a performer, and after this weekend I'll follow her to the ends of the earth. I'll leave you with my favorite picture from the whole thing: I had GA tickets on the floor, but i kinda hung towards the back because I'm not a super big fan of crowds, and about 20 minutes before the show started these two older couples (like grandparent age) arrived looking very much out of place (like they were going to a night out at the opera or something), and through the conversation i overheard I figured out that the man who bought the tickets didn't know there weren't actually seats (despite their tickets having seat numbers for some reason), so they attempted to get one of the theater ushers to find them some new seats to no avail, so they spent the entire show standing uncomfortably in the pit, clearly a little weirded out by all of the fans surrounding them. It was very funny, and this picture of one of the couples from about halfway through the show makes me laugh every time I see it because it reminds me of the guy who just assumed "closer = better" and bought these tickets without a clue of what was in store for them. From looking up the situation surrounding the current circumstance, it seems Scott Borchetta took advantage of her lack of industry knowledge back in the day and essentially coerced her into signing over her masters. Then he sold them to Scooter Braun behind her back, something he didn't even deny doing because he allegedly offered her a "fair" deal- this "fair" deal was that she would retain one master for every new track she recorded for them, new tracks which she would not own, which is a completely ridiculous feedback loop. She was NOT given the opportunity to just buy the masters back as many many artists do once they hit the big time, they refused to give her this choice. She chose to walk away instead of taking this deal and staying under their thumb and so they retained the licensing for her older stuff. Now they are holding it over her head, presumably because a) they want to retain the rights to her older music to continue to profit off of it and b) they are out of touch millionaire men with the opportunity to control a woman Really messed up stuff like a decade plus in the making, these dudes can go to hell CJacobs fucked around with this message at 07:41 on Nov 15, 2019 |

You prey on the desire to be famous and make people sign their lives and art away and if you do it enough eventually one will hit and you’ll be totally in control. The worst case scenario is what happened to Kesha, where she couldn’t find her way out of that contract despite being sexually assaulted by the guy who held the power, but so many young artists sign their life away and when they get famous discover they don’t have any control. This is why what Taylor is doing is good, even if Taylor herself isn’t always. She’s one of the most famous musicians in the world and she’s going to try and leverage that fame to actually change things. I just hope she doesn’t stop after she gets hers, I would love to see her become a strong advocate for young artists. (Although I know there’s a very good chance that she bails after she wins for herself.)

Scooter Braun is a douche, but I think he just made a business decision. Even without Taylor, that label still has Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett and other country acts who basically print money. Borchetta seems to be on this big "I made you" revenge push when, in reality, she's the main reason he didn't fall flat on his rear end with this venture.
