It was a hard choice between Currawong and Magpie but the Magpie won out in the end.

The movie Point Break used the '50 year storm' at Bells Beach as the most hardcore thing ever. Hooded Plovers use that as the babysitter. Quite literally. They nest on the beach and use the Souther Ocean swell as a huge part of the predator deterrent.

I'm having a blast seeing new birds here in China, but I suck at identifying them. Even with my book. Anyway don't know who this is, but check out that floofy tail!

So, the Channel-billed Cuckoos have arrived back in my part of Aus for their breeding season. Got woken up very early by their distinctive screeches. You know it's spring when you hear this delightful bird announce it's presence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wL9vHNC0gLE Interesting bird though, the worlds largest parasitic bird they lay their eggs in the nests of Australian Magpies, Butcherbirds and Currawongs to be raised there, then around February the parents and the juveniles all migrate back north to New Guinea and Indonesia. In the Northern Territory because they arrive at the start of the rainy season they are called Stormbirds or Rainbirds.
