Sanitary Naptime posted:Who is saying that? I'm saying it now, loving hell. Labour still has too many right wing MPs making GBS threads themselves and the leadership have let themselves get pulled too much into the Westminster system to see they just need to do it. A 3 month extension is the longest the EU is going to ever give and resistance to Boris' deal is going to keep shrinking. Nevermind the loving weather just have the election now before everything falls into place for that Tory poo poo.

Secondly, if that’s all sorted, then yeah, go for it, especially in a way that gets the WAB poo poo pushed to the side, but until I’m sure about the first point I’m not keen on saying “they’re not being quick enough”.

While I agree with that ideally there is the concern that the government + lib dems + snp will end up voting for an election before then which would be unfortunate for labour. Though that's more of an argument against the liberals/snp.

This country is mental The wifes parents (factory worker, nurse) last night said they hate jez but like boris. Why? How are poor people convinced by the lies of the rich so easily? They can’t name a single policy from either party but are so confident in their views. I don’t get it lol

Because policies are complicated and viewing politics as an extremely simple personality contest is easier, and the object of course is not to understand the material nature of reality, but to construct a narrative sufficient to answer any particularly nagging questions regardless of whether it's actually true.

I guess I meant that if Johnson were forced to tepidly forbid no-deal, it would make them even angrier and ratchet up the anti-tory rhetoric. Maybe they’re (BP) already at their ceiling, though.

Wait so clue me in, a person who's not been paying much attention lately: I thought that the letter had been sent, shenanigans notwithstanding, and the EU didn't give a poo poo about the shenanigans & are happy to extend in principle, precise details TBC So, we're looking at averting NDB imminently, but the current state of play is that Boris could just revoke the letter or whatever leaving us SOL. Which would mean that the LDs are pretty much risking NDB just to score a few cheap political points at Labour's expense? Is that basically it?

Borrovan posted:Wait so clue me in, a person who's not been paying much attention lately: https://twitter.com/QuentinAries/status/1188757689171611648 So letter will theoretically arrive before lunchtime tomorrow. Johnson then is required by the Benn Act to accept it immediately without caveat. There was a potential get-out clause if Johnson was offered a date other than Jan 31st, he had to accept within 2 days or before Oct 30, whichever was sooner, which he could theoretically have fobbed off or avoided via this election being called. He could also have asked parliament to allow him to reject whatever date was provided, but lol at that passing.

Borrovan posted:Wait so clue me in, a person who's not been paying much attention lately: The EU has not formally offered the extension and boris has not sent the official acceptance letter. Both of these will likely happen in the next couple of days, as he is obligated to accept it immediately if it is the january date, but they have not yet actually happened. So literally they could wait two days and they'd be fine, but that's too hard.

Cheers all. So we're like 90% sure it's averted, & the LDs & SNP are totally happy to take that risk to score cheap political points. Corbz should definitely whip to oppose then, a few more weak-rear end JFC memes are totally a price worth paying to be able to point out that we are literally the only ones that are fighting to make sure NDB doesn't happen.

The excuse they're using is that the bill has to pass three readings etc. so Johnson will have to apply for the extension as it goes through the chambers. The only danger was the FTPA election call which gives the government control of the timetable. Thing is, this is absolutely a stunt.

Unfortunately if labour does oppose it, and it passes on tory/ld/snp votes then labour literally had to be dragged to an election. It's an empty threat if labour does get the opportunity to call an election when they want to, but if the government supports it then they won't, they'll only have voted against an election until the government made them have one.
