haha if you saw some of the measures people took to (try to/usually fail to) thwart the crows where I used to live the padlock wouldn't seem amiss

But also idk why I'm giving benefit of the doubt so they're probably right that it's been installed to try and starve homeless people :/

I had to buy binsprings for my garbage bins because magpies and crows discovered how to flip them open and pull the bags apart.

Not that I have any food waste in my bins.

They're just bastards.

Bears will pick the lock, and then teach their cubs how to do it.

Bear mothers breed a culture of dependency this way. The only way to prevent this is to enforce stiff penalties and disincentivize---yeah, I can't keep going with this one, sorry.

Seriously though that trash can was probably originally designed to keep bears out.

I have no idea if bears are a major problem in Greensboro, NC but I somehow doubt it.

Brown or black (can't remember which, might be both?) bears live all up and down the East coast as far as I know, but they tend to stay away from cities

I go patrolling for bears every weekend.

Just like fishing though please remember that the release is as important as the catch. Allow others to enjoy bear hunting as much as you have.

you're thinking of Grizzlies which are brown but arent brown bears. unless theres an east coast brown bear that is primarily a carnivore that's somehow different from the west coast one

Grizzlies are a subspecies of brown bear, and are mostly differentiated based on where they live/what food they have access to. If anything grizzlies are only considered meaner because they live in areas where food is harder to find.

See gene flow between insular, coastal, and interior populations of brown bears in Alaska

Which found, among other notable things that "morphologically undistinguished brown bears of the ABC islands of Alaska had a mitochondrial haplotype that were more similar to polar bears than in any other brown bears"

Those Alaskan bears are grizzlies, and many of the other American brown bears in their sample were kodiaks. All technically ursus arctos, but the genetic proximity of the grizzly subspecies to the technically distinct polars is closer.
