Born of Frustration
My wife and I are heading over for the first time in ten days or so, and I’ve been looking at possibly booking us a nice “date night” high end dinner in Tokyo. Does anyone have any experience using Pocket Concierge ( https://pocket-concierge.jp/en/ )?

They seem to have a decent selection of Michelin rated sushi places and the booking fees seem a lot more reasonable than other sites I’ve seen.

For what it’s worth, we are staying at Keio Plaza, but I’m not sure if their concierge could find us a nice place without any hassle of going through a third party. If so, I’m totally fine with going that route. I figure most of our evenings will be spent getting loaded in izakayas anyway. Although we lived in NYC for 15 years, and always did enjoy a nice dinner every once in a while.

I’ve been wondering about this since I got back: Almost 90% of the dogs I saw in Tokyo were the same kind of brown tiny poodle. I met one lady at a coffee shop with her adopted corgi. She spoke excellent English but I didn’t think to ask more questions. Are animal shelters common in Japan? I assumed it was almost exclusively (expensive) pet stores.

There are some shelters. Like every ku in Tokyo has some kind of temporary place, and afterwards they are sent on to this place. Looking at the numbers, it seems at this particular facility the number of pets they handle has dropped from 5900 to under 1000 in like 10 years. They also aren't putting as many down. I don't know if that's a good sign or not? Perhaps there are actually less strays, or perhaps budget cuts mean they can't handle thousands of nekos anymore or whatever.

In any case, yeah, our dog (boston terrier) was a rescue, not pet shop.

That's awesome. I'm sure this is a stupid question, but if you need to travel around town with your dog, do you just need to own your own car? I imagine trains and buses don't allow them on. I guess if they fit in a bicycle basket...

I'm curious about owning a dog in Tokyo in general. Dogs are becoming more and more acceptable to bring places in the U.S. Even a lot of coffee places around here allow you to bring the dog inside. I didn't see anything like that in Tokyo, and most dogs were again, the teeny tiny poodles. I did see a couple of larger dogs in Yoyogi and Ueno.

I've seen backpacks that are large enough to hold tiny dogs, or sometimes strollers people will bring with them, but mostly only on a weekend. otherwise yeah it's walking (or bike) distance with the dog. one of my friends in the suburbs does have a house and a dog though, so it's more common in Saitama or Chiba most likely.

some places are alright with dogs, like cafes or places they can be outside. but again it's like 10-15 years ago in the US before everybody started bringing their furbaby with them at all times. mostly you see women with them little dogs bring them places they shouldn't, most shopping malls and such are signed similar as the US -- dogs would have to be service animals to technically be let in.

big dogs are basically the same kind of "gently caress off I'm rich" sign as driving a Mercedes in Shibuya is. Apartments are often strict with sizes they'll allow, if they allow dogs at all. so having a golden lab or something is a sign you have a house and can afford the space and the doggo.

Previous years before they technically banned drinking in the area were nuuuuuts. Dangerously crowded to the point you start getting those crowd waves where the entire crowd starts swaying from momentum and poo poo

For small dogs you don't really need a car for just getting around town. JR and Toei have some rules about the dimensions and weight of the pet+carrier you take on the train or bus. And you are supposed to buy your doggie a ticket for 290 yen. But it's not like anyone is checking whether or not you have a pet in your luggage. I guess you could go further afield as well, my wife went down to Kobe on the shinkansen to pick up our dog.

Something huge like a golden would require a car though, yeah.

I don't think there is any kind of pet revolution happening here. There are a handful of places that I guess are novelties--the kushikatsu izakaya Tanaka chain famously allows dogs at many locations, and Odaiba has an onsen resort for dogs--but for the most part as mentioned it's only local restaurants/cafes with terraces and such.

I had a dog in Tokyo when I still lived there, it was cool, I'd get to talk to people I wouldn't normally talk to quickly when I took her for walks which was good for practicing the language.

Most restaurants and stuff are fussy about dogs but we'd just look on tabelog or other websites and find some of the ones that allow dogs, there's still quite a few of those. If a place has an outdoor terrace with seating it's also usually okay. Vets are usually pretty decent too, at least the two or three that I knew.

My dog is tiny but there's a good reason for that, having a big dog is pretty inconvenient I'd imagine, the worst I've seen were two border collies who were kept in an apartment, the owner did take them out in his car for walks and stuff, and they even had their own room in their house, but they looked really bored and barked at people. In the park there were usually two separate groups of people walking dogs, one for big dogs and one for small dogs. There would be golden retrievers and some bernese mountain dogs and doodles, I ended up knowing all of their names too.

My favorite was a labrador retriever called nami who, whenever she saw me in the park, would walk to me, drop onto my feet and make me rub her belly, then after i stopped and walked away she wouldn't get back up and i'd see her owner sort of trying to drag her back up on her feet in vain for a while
