Did you check to see if the real actually was added? Lots of people mentioning these types of thoughts being broken in the bug reports thread on the steam forum and as of 16 hours ago, there was a dev response saying they’re already fixed in the next patch. I assume that patch hasn’t come out in the last 16 hours, but I’m not at home to check.

There is no combat, per say. There might be a couple points in the game with violence, and reaction speed could or could not prove useful there, but the game is about dialogue and environment, not fighting.

I just want to emphasize to please don’t be immediately turned off by the absence of combat. I would normally never buy a game that doesn’t have a rigorously developed combat system (The Witcher 3 being a notable exception, but even there I found the combat perfectly serviceable, in fact very good for the type of game it’s trying to be) but this game is so good at what it does that anyone who’s remotely interested in games as a storytelling medium should play it, even if it’s not the type of game they’d typically play.

I am curious what they'd do with a non-amnesiac protagonist. A lot of what Disco Elysium does with Harry it does by letting you reconstruct this man from the wreckage of his total amnesia. A game in this style with a protagonist who hasn't drank themselves into being a blank slate would be very different and I'm interested to see what this team could do with that.

In a sense the amnesia doesn't matter, it's just a tool to get you to reexamine how you see the world. A lot of things could get you to do that. It's not like your life and the consequences of it aren't still present in the game, they are loving everywhere. Take their idea for a sequel involving a heavily pregnant woman. Instead of a lack of memory causing you to redefine yourself it's the birth of a new life. How do you see the world they are coming into, what type of future do you want to shape for them?

And so forth and so on, there's a lot of ways to tackle the basic system they have here.

I overall enjoyed fallout 4 enough, especially having grown up in the Boston area, but with a sort of growing sense of disgust at its shallowness. I think I quit after about the first 1/3 to 1/2 of the game. Boring combat, with little to make up for it elsewhere is a major reason. I have stayed very far away from fallout 76, so I don’t really understand what this comparison means.

I went with apocalypse cop from the start and intend to continue for this playthrough (I internalized apoc thought), and I assume I ought to go with 'end of humanity' kind of choices to proceed along this route, however I've grown kind of fond of disco stuff, is there a disco cop archetype and am I hurting apocalypse by choosing disco dialogue options instead of doomsayer?

your choice of personality doesn't have a huge branching effect on the storyline. at the same time, however, there are very dense and subtle consequences that i have only been able to sometimes pick up on. klassje, for instance, responds very well to your louche disco supercop persona to the point of sometimes playing along with if you go down that route. this alone is kind of a brilliant way for the game to communicate the somewhat screwed up condition of her own personality ahead of time.

First time you meet her straight up tells you to stick with one persona because it’ll help when you interrogate her. Not sure if it’s because I chose the supercop option or if I just missed it the first playthrough

You know, instead of more Kim and Harry, I want a Contact Mike sequel. The setting is so strong that you could turn it into an anthology about broken people in a broken world. Any of them. Communist and fascist stuff isn't stat related it's choice related. Don't want to do drugs or be a communist/fascist, just...don't make those choices. All 3 is enough that you can throw clothes and points at most checks to get them done and is a nice base for "Super boring".

Basically, a flat 3/3/3/3 spread ensures you'll be able to handle basically everything the game at baseline will through at you, and enough room to improve to deal with stuff you can't. It also, however, limits the amount of Passive Skill Checks you'll see and as those trigger a large amount of text, much of which is context or information, it does mean you'll be getting less of the content that the game provides.

If you want broad competence in general but aren't afraid of a little wackiness, some of which may prove more insightful than you'd expect, a 2/4/3/3 with specialization in Perception will provide a lot of flavor text without really overwhelming you. Putting a 4 in Psyche is just a solid pick in general, if you're interested in both competence and experiencing content. Inland Empire is basically the power of your imagination (applied in a more holistic way than Conceptualization, which is the power of your imagination for specific topics), which is a lot more useful than it sounds as it also governs your hunches and police instincts. And delusions of psychic power, but that's where Volition comes in. Volition is the lynchpin of competence since it keeps wackier skills in line and, when you do get advice from it, it's always reliable. Esprit de Corps is a skill that basically just lets you read your fellow cops better including your partner, and it also adds a lot of extra flavor text about what other cops happen to be doing concurrently to whatever you happen to be doing at the time. Empathy is just plain useful for social situations in general. Authority is lol.

Other skills to consider are Shivers, which is kind of your sixth sense to the heartbeat of the City itself, and while it isn't always immediately helpful or sometimes apparently relevant, when Shivers hits, it hits HARD, and you might not want to miss out on it. Perception is just useful in general because, like Empathy, there's just a ton of passive checks involving it during dialog.

A lot of the Intellect skills are cool and Encyclopedia provides an absurd amount of lore to dig into, but they're also not as vital imo and even the hardest Conceptualization check in the game is basically designed to be failed, and you get a Thought (a feat, basically) to internalize and retry the check later with a huge bonus.
