Though for the AI opfor it'd make them easier to salvage so ST ammo is okay in that sense.

Ammo in the legs makes sense from a gameplay perspective but from a fluff perspective it is generally a terrible idea.

Playing this in MekHQ is massively boring. Only a handful of mechs and vehicles, tech devolves rather than evolves to give you more toys to play with, and there are no stakes to anything.

Unless you were to like, do some time-traveler shenanigans with that one ship seized by Comstar that accidentally went forward in time now going backwards to the 1st succession war era or something.

Just think of them as a HBK or CN9 that can carry more armor and guns, and work from there.

Yeah, in fluff the ammo is in the same section of the gun/launcher, or adjacent to it, so it can... be fed into the gun in a way that makes any kind of logical sense. Running an ammo belt up a leg and through a hip and torso section is silly even by the standards of BT "realism."

In game-y terms it makes sense to put ammo in legs and jump jets in torsos instead of the other way around.

Lawman 0 posted:

I love jump jets and put them in everything except like the Cyclops Z and Banshee, where their available tonnage is total poo poo to start with for their size and the jets weigh 2 tons per.

Leaving them off LRM boats and superfast lights makes sense too I guess. But jumping around is both tactically useful and fun as hell.

Banshee brawlers get JJs because they don't need more space. I wouldn't bother putting them on anything that only has three slots though, at that point you're barely moving faster than a normal move and generating heat to do it.

I'm not a "JJs on everything" guy, but I always have someone with JJs. Its up to you.

If you have a guy with coolant flush and tactics 9, I'd say definitely go with JJs. You have a solid backstabber there. The TDR-5SE is better at this due to its support hardpoints, but the 5SS is perfectly fine as well.

If you already have a good jumper and/or don't have anyone with tactics 9, you may go without and just go for more heat efficiency or more guns (i.e. add the SRM6, esp. if its +4 damage). If you have any good melee mods (+40 damage or more), that might be a good argument no JJs/maximum guns.

JJs on everything, man. Especially on the slower assaults, it just gives you so much flexibility. There's nothing better than jumping your entire Assault lance around the map like some kind of deranged Cap Trooper squad.

Jumpjets are never a bad idea. The heat gen is worth being able to reposition, change face, move up/down terrain, gain the same amount of evasion as sprinting, and still be able to fire.

Actual good advice: DFA in singleplayer is highly situational and entirely confined to goomba stomping Demolishers and knocking mechs out of Guard/Bulwark for the rest of your lance to delete.

More useful in skirms.

TACs are bad, and its good that they removed them. Its just a RNG roll that says "you lose" at some point. This is especially true when you have 4 units, and the enemy has more: getting one of your guys instagibbed means a lot more for you than the enemy.

My favorite TAC moment was a CBT game (played in MegaMek) against a guy I played MW4 with. 4v4 with some BV limit. First round of shooting he runs a Mongoose (25 tonner) up to my pristine BNC-3S. He hits with a single SL, TAC CT, triple engine hit. BNC is dead and the game is essentially over due to RNG. I mean sure, its hilarious, but its bad gameplay.

Yeah, that mission seems comically unfair to me. Just in the convoy alone I faced a King Crab, some light heavies, then Demolishers and SRM/LRM carriers. Rough, but OK. Then a bunch of assault mechs show up to your flank.

When the Dragoons were first introduced to the storyline, was their Clan background already plotted out or was that decided on later when the Clan invasion storyline was being drafted?

I'm a little late to the party but:

The 4th succession war series of books were published from about 1988-1989. Wolves on the Border, the big novel about the Wolf's Dragoons, was published in March of 1989 and included a brief but (in hindsight) absolutely chilling little ritual that Dechan Frasier can't make heads or tails of (Seyla).

The Clan Invasion started with Lethal Heritage in September of 1989.

I'm not sure when the Wolf's Dragoons comic Joshua Wolf died in was published, but IIRC it was sometime between 1984 and 1986, but that one was mostly about the Marik civil war and was published before any of the novels IIRC. I'm not sure any of the fluff was really finalized at that point. Even if they weren't finished at the time, they were fully realized in a hurry.

Lazyhound posted:

:xcom:
I am always utterly terrified of anything with AC/20s (Demolishers! :argh:) because even if it misses, it's still entirely possible that the stray shot could hit something else. I nearly lost my Royal Highlander in the final mission because of a stray PPC shot hitting it in the head. If it had been an AC/20, I would've lost Behemoth.

Organ Fiend posted:

Your mistake there was using a Banshee. :j:

I know the -3S is actually good, I just wanna be one of the cool kids.

Edit: I've also found my loadout gimmick in this game, at least in the campaign. It is, in short: Maximum armor (minus enough to get to integer tonnage, obviously), maximum jump jets, and a small selection of weapons with partially overlapping ranges, with enough heat sinks that you can hold down the trigger until it goes click and not need to worry about heat in anything colder than the badlands. There's so much attrition in the game, and you're outnumbered so often, I've yet to find a strategy more effective than "jump everywhere, spamming your mini-alphas and focus-firing one thin-armored dumbass at a time or chump anything dumb enough to show you its rear arc". Bonus points if it's got an AC/20 and I can go hunting for headshots, or if I can get in melee range. Who cares if I've only got 4 medium lasers and a PPC, I still punch for 120!

Without torso-turning, "everybody shoot him in the same side arc until he falls over and/or gets cored" is way easier to pull off, too.

Edit 2: Still salty that I went through all the trouble of legging that King Crab in the final mission and then it didn't even come up as salvage. :colbert:
